The cost of a PhD in the UK is generally anywhere from £15,000 to £35,000 for annual PhD tuition fees. On average, a PhD in the UK costs around £20,000; nonetheless, this amount can be higher for international students. Fortunately, various universities offer reduced fees and living expenses. To assist aspiring PhD students in their decision-making process, we have compiled a list of ten UK universities where the overall cost is noticeably lower than the national average.

#1. University of Chester

The University of Chester is a doctoral college with dedicated support to assist you throughout your PhD. At the University of Chester, postgraduate research students can undertake full-time or part-time study with a number of fully-funded PhD studentships annually leading to an MPhil or PhD.

With a total cost for their full-time PhDs reaching just over £13,000 for international students and nearly £5,000 for home students per year, Chester is a fantastic choice for postgraduate study. #2. University of Cumbria

The University of Cumbria came into existence in 2007 as a result of a merger between St. Martin’s College, Cumbria Institute of the Arts, and The Cumbrian campus of UCL. However, the institutes that came together to form the university have a long history in education that goes back more than 150 years.

The full-time duration of the course is 3 years and costs £4800 per annum for UK and EU students and £13,500 per annum for international students. Staffordshire University stands out as one of the top least expensive universities in the United Kingdom for pursuing a doctoral degree. While the annual fee for a PhD program at Staffordshire University is £5,000 for UK/EU students, the field of computing commands a slightly higher cost, as of the time of writing.

Although not one of the cheapest Universities in the UK in terms of tuition fees for international students, Staffordshire University has a range of financial support in terms of discounts, grants and bursaries for international PhD students in the UK.

#6. Teesside University

Teesside University is located in the northeast of England and has grown significantly in the last few years, investing over £270m into its campus. Teesside University has a vibrant and modern campus environment and has recently opened its new campus heart. The university has a good health and life science department and was, in 2009, listed as one of the top 15 institutions in the United Kingdom for health research.

Teesside University is dedicated to offering a secure, inviting, and all-encompassing campus. This amount covers every expense related to teaching, examinations and assessment. They also offer a range of postgraduate scholarships and discounts, reducing tuition fees further to graduates of Leeds Beckett University (at the time of application) and those with a 2:1 or first-class degree.

#8. London Metropolitan University

London Metropolitan University is placed eighth in our countdown of the affordable universities in the UK to study a PhD. It is situated in London, a prestigious city for study and finances, and has a reputation for providing good value for money compared to other London institutions.

#9. The University of Bolton

The University of Bolton is known for being a friendly, vibrant, and exciting place to be, the university has a good reputation for providing a supportive student environment. All these will make it a comfortable place to pursue your PhD degree. Also, the fee is very affordable, where international students can do their PhD for only £13,550 per year.

The University of Bolton Graduate School offers several scholarships annually for home and overseas students. These include the Research and International PhD Scholarship which provides up to 150 students with £1,000 to help with research and course costs and a further 50 International students with a £2,000 fee waiver.

London Arts and Humanities Partnership (LAHP)

The  LAHP AHRC Doctoral Training Partnership  funds up to 80 research studentships per year across all subject areas covered by LAHP. Applications for funding should be made directly to LAHP, and open on 25th November 2024 (TBC)

DEADLINE FOR APPLICATIONS TO FUNDER:   5pm 24th JANUARY 2025 (TBC)

UK students with excellent academic records in history of science or philosophy of science are encouraged to apply. Please note that in order to be eligible for this funding you must have established your supervisor before applying to LAHP for funding. We strongly recommend that interested individuals contact potential supervisors by late November, and you will need to have submitted a standard UCL PhD admissions application complete with references, by the STS January deadline. However you are advised to submit a complete application earlier if possible.

Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC)

The department has ‘+3’ and '1+3' recognition from the ESRC in the category of Science and Technology Studies. Studentships are available to UK and EU applicants intending to pursue a PhD and who have already received a foundation in research training (+3), or who wish to pursue a PhD after completing an ESRC-recognised MSc (including those within the department) (1+3). Applicants with such qualifications who are interested in the areas of public understanding of science, science policy research, social history of science, or the sociology of science and technology are encouraged to discuss the possibility of applying for an ESRC grant with the departmental graduate tutor at the time of their application. British Society for the Philosophy of Science

The British Society for the Philosophy of Science offers scholarships for doctoral work in the philosophy of science at a UK university. Choosing to dedicate the next few years of your life towards a PhD is no light decision. Not only will it require you to dedicate an extensive amount of your personal time, but you’ll also need to consider how you’ll fund it. This raises the question, how much does a PhD cost in the UK?

The cost of a PhD can be divided into three key areas; tuition fees, living expenses and research expenditures. The combined cost of these are approximately  £20,000 per year  for UK students and can increase to over  £40,000 per year  for international students. A more in-depth breakdown of these costs can be found below. We’ve also compared these costs to other countries and outlined the various methods available to you to fund your PhD studies.

Tuition Fees

For UK ‘home’ students, the tuition fee for a PhD varies between £3,000 to £6,000 per academic year. For 2023/24 programmes, most universities opt for £4,712 per year within this range. Although this number may seem a little odd, it’s commonly adopted due to being the indicative rate set by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) for UK universities.

International Fees

Unlike for UK applicants, the rates for international students don’t align with the indicative level set by UKRI. Following the implementation of Brexit, EU students now follow the same fee rates as other international students. International students will find that their tuition fees are higher than those of home students. For example, at the time of writing, the average annual PhD tuition charge at the University of Dundee is £4,825 for home students undertaking an Engineering PhD. This same average is £25,305 for international students.

International applicants will also find that the fee for PhDs in STEM subjects are greater than those in non-STEM subjects. For example, at the University of Bristol, a doctorate degree in Mechanical Engineering costs £25,300 per year whilst a doctorate in Medieval Studies costs £20,100 per year.

To summarise, international students can expect a tuition fee of between £16,000 to £25,000 per year, with an average of around £19,600 per academic year. Non-STEM subjects will generally be at the lower end of the range, whilst STEM subjects will be at the higher end of the range.

Part-time Fees

The above fees are based on full-time postgraduate study. If you’re doing a part-time PhD, you can expect the fee to be half of these amounts. Although this may appear to be a cheaper option, keep in mind that the average duration of part-time PhDs are twice that of full-time PhDs. Therefore, the total tuition cost will amount to the same value and the end of both courses.

Other Degree-related Costs

Research support fees.

If your research project requires a high use of consumables, equipment or other resources, you may have to support the cost of these through an additional annual fee. This additional annual fee, often referred to as either a ‘research support’ or ‘bench’ fee, often apply to laboratory-based STEM research projects. Bench fees vary between different projects, even those within the same field. Therefore, it is best to speak to the admissions team on a project-by-project basis to receive anything useful.

Another cost you will need to account for is travelling. As part of your degree, many supervisors will expect you to attend conferences, training workshops, or other collaboration opportunities. As a result, you will often need to travel to various destinations which aren’t always limited to the UK. Although some programmes will cover these costs, it’s not unheard of that some positions will expect you to fund this yourself. It’s impossible to put a value on this, as the extent of travel depends on each project. Therefore, it would be wise to speak with the admissions team and current PhD students. They can provide you with an accurate estimate and let you know whether the university will cover the expenses.

Overtime Period Fee

When you’re enrolled into a PhD programme, you will be given a period to complete your PhD within. This period is known as your ‘registration period’ and is usually 3-4 years for a full-time PhD and 6-7 years for a part-time PhD. If you’re given an extension due to not completing your PhD study within this time, you will need to pay an overtime registration fee. Although the amount depends on each university, the University of Leeds sets theirs as £290 for 2023/24.

Living Costs

From a 2022 survey of over 2,300 university students , the average living cost, covering expenditures such as rent, bills, food and recreation, was £924 per month. This equates to £11,088 per year.

Although this is an average cost, your true cost of living will depend on your location. Living in major cities such as London will draw significantly higher rent and travel costs than living in more rural locations. Although your living situation will in large be driven by the university you undertake your PhD with, you should factor it in when deciding which universities to apply to.

To put this into perspective, the survey average of £11,088 per year uses a rent average of £418 per month. In London, this average increases to £650 a month and can surpass £1,000 if staying in university halls or private student accommodation. This is supported by University College London (UCL) who state you should expect an average rent of £1,028 per month if living in private accommodation around their university.

If you’re an international student, you should factor in return flights back home. Although this may seem like a small expenditure compared to tuition fees and rent, they can add up quickly depending on the frequency and distance of your trip.

How to Fund Your PhD

Studentships.

A studentship is a form of scholarship for doctoral students. They can either be partially funded, which cover tuition fees only, or fully funded, which also covers living costs through a ‘stipend’.

Studentships can be found in various places. Research Councils (RCUK) and European Social Fund (ESF) make funding available to university departments, who in turn make the funding available to doctoral students. Therefore, you will find that there are many postgraduate funding opportunities available to you, with the best places to look being the RCUK and ESF websites and the university departments themselves. External institutions which focus on research and development such as research trusts and charities would also be a useful place to look for a funded PhD.

Doctoral Loans

If you’re a UK student, you may qualify for a Postgraduate Doctoral Loan from Student Finance England. This form of financial aid is available for nearly all postgraduate research degrees undertaken in a higher education setting. They will allow you to borrow up to a total of £28,673 for 2023/24 courses .

Graduate Teaching Assistantships

Graduate Teaching Assistantships are a form of studentships which allow you to teach undergraduates as part of your research degree. This not only helps improve your academic skills, but it also enables you to receive a salary whilst you’re studying. As well as teaching assistantships, some departments also provide opportunities for demonstrations, marking papers, and tutorial support. The amount you can earn through these schemes will depend on how many hours you work and what agreements you make with your supervisor or course leader.

Working Whilst You Study – Part-time PhDs

A research student may opt for a part-time PhD as opposed to a full-time one. Although this would double the duration of their studies, it allows them to take on a part-time job to improve their financial situation. For students going down this route, it would be highly beneficial to pick up a part-time role in a position related to your industry. This will help refine your skills and increase your employability within this career role should you choose to pursue it after your degree.

If you’re an international student, keep in mind that you’ll likely be on a study visa. Therefore, there’ll be certain restrictions on what you can and can’t do alongside your study.

How Does This Compare to the Fees in Other Countries?

When considering the tuition fee of PhDs across different countries, the United Kingdom is generally considered as being in the ‘middle-ground‘ region.

A handful of countries offer PhD programmes for free. These include, but are not limited to, Denmark, Greece, Iceland, Norway and Poland.

The middle-ground region comprises countries such as Austria, Spain, Russia and New Zealand where postgraduate fees range from £1,400 to £4,000 per academic year.

The upper-end region comprises countries such as Hong Kong and the United States, where postgraduate tuition fees for a PhD student can go up to £33,000 per year.

Doctor of Philosophy - MPhil / Phd

Why study this course.

A PhD is conducted purely by research. Each PhD is the unique development of your individual research project, performed under the guidance of at least two supervisory members of staff with expertise in the research area.

You can pursue a PhD in any area of research within the University where suitable expertise is available to support the proposed project. Cross-disciplinary projects are welcome. The University provides a supportive framework for research and each student’s work is carefully overseen and progress monitored. It is also possible to study a PhD via distance learning at London Met.

Completing a PhD means you'll be making an original contribution to knowledge. It requires an excellent overview of existing research in your field, plus analytical skills to assess research claims. You'll also need to be a self-motivator and be able to dedicate considerable time to completing a PhD. 

Although technically there is no taught component to this degree, you will receive research training and have access to any master's level modules that may be useful to your research topic.

Our research community is lively and diverse. You'll be joining us at an exciting time where the University is investing into research. Entry requirements.

You will be required to have:

• a good honours degree from a UK university or equivalent (first or upper-second class), although applicants will usually tend to have obtained a master's degree before entry

Candidates with other qualifications are considered on their merits.

As a part of the application process, you are required to submit a research proposal outlining how you intend to investigate your topic of interest. In the proposal, you will need to clearly state your research questions, aims and objectives, as well as your review of the literature on the topic and the corresponding research design. The document needs to specify what your original contribution to the knowledge will be. You can find more information about the structure and content of the research proposal . Please note that your application cannot be processed without the proposal and you will be able to upload it, once you click 'Apply now' and start the application process.

The University only offers supervision to candidates if there is adequate available supervisory expertise in the area of the research project.

Accreditation of Prior Learning

Any university-level qualifications or relevant experience you gain prior to starting university could count towards your course at London Met. Find out more about applying for Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) .

English language requirements

To study a degree at London Met, you must be able to demonstrate proficiency in the English language. If you require a Student visa (previously Tier 4) you may need to provide the results of a Secure English Language Test (SELT) such as Academic IELTS. This course requires you to meet our standard requirements .

If you need (or wish) to improve your English before starting your degree, the University offers a Pre-sessional Academic English course to help you build your confidence and reach the level of English you require.

To obtain a PhD, you're expected to identify a research gap in your chosen subject area and make an original contribution to knowledge.

During the course of the research, your work is assessed annually by a Research Student Progress Group. This ensures that good progress is being made and that adequate guidance is available.

The degree Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) is awarded by the University after the successful presentation of a thesis based on an original piece of research, completed under the supervision of University staff, and the successful defence of the thesis at an oral examination.

Where this course can take you

Many people with an PhD become lecturers, teachers or researchers, but these are by no means the only destinations.

Depending on your discipline, you may go into industry (this is frequently the case for graduates in biological or computer science), the City (business and law graduates), public sector management and/or policy-making (social science and business graduates), international governmental organisations (social science and business graduates), the social professions or non-governmental organisations.

Many of our graduates are mid-career and use their degree for career enhancement in areas such as social services, education, counselling, health and social care, or diplomacy.

Distance learning

There is a distance learning option available. 

PhD by prior publication/output

The University will award the degrees of Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) to registered students who successfully complete approved programmes. All proposed research programmes will be considered for research degree registration on their academic merits.

A PhD by prior output allows students who don't have traditional qualifications but have produced research and developed their knowledge to a doctoral level to gain academic recognition.

The publications of the student must be accessible to scholars or other interested persons. The work submitted must have been subjected to peer review by the relevant academic community and also provide evidence of an independent, original and significant contribution to knowledge and critical judgement. All work should have been published in the last 10 years and be traceable in publicly available databases, catalogues etc.

Programmes of research may be proposed in any field of study, as long as the proposed programme is capable of leading to scholarly research. The written thesis may be supplemented by material other than written form, if special provision has been made and agreed.

What is the difference between the MPhil and PhD?

Research students at London Met can work towards a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). To obtain a PhD you’re expected to investigate a topic and make an original contribution to knowledge. At MPhil level, your research should represent an extension of existing knowledge, although the demands of originality and sustained enquiry are less than those required for a PhD.

Additional costs

Please note, in addition to the tuition fee there may be additional costs for things like equipment, materials, printing, textbooks, trips, fieldwork, specialist conferences or professional body fees.

Additionally, there may be other activities that are not formally part of your course and not required to complete your course, but which you may find helpful (for example, optional field trips). The costs of these are additional to your tuition fee and the fees set out above and will be notified when the activity is being arranged.

A postgraduate degree lets you explore your subject at a deeper level and can help you to stand out in the tough job market. It all comes at a cost though, so we’ve put together a list of unis offering the lowest tuition fees for UK students studying a taught master’s degree. Featuring unis from England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, it shows you don’t need to go far to find affordable tuition.

Why do some subjects cost more?

When you study an undergraduate degree, the only difference in the fee you pay comes down to which nation you’re from. The subject you study makes no difference. If you’re from England and study Medicine, you’ll pay £9,250 per year. If you are from England and study English Literature, you also pay £9,250 per year.

The same does not apply to postgraduate tuition.

Clinical courses like Medicine, Dentistry and Vet Science cost far more to run than other subjects. They may need more contact time with lecturers, increasing staffing costs. Students also expect to learn using the latest simulation facilities.

Similarly, ‘lab’ courses like engineering and science must pay for precision equipment and skilled technicians to support students’ learning.

Least expensive are the ‘classroom’ courses. These are subjects like History or English – humanities, languages and social sciences. Students studying these subjects may only get lectures, meaning fewer staff may be required – saving the uni money.

So, at postgraduate level, tuition fees can more accurately reflect the cost of the subject. If you want to find affordable tuition fees, courses like English or Creative Writing MAs are often the cheapest. MScs in science and engineering generally cost more.

But courses aren’t always priced according to their cost. MBA courses often charge higher tuition fees than business degrees run as an MA or MSc, due to their popularity.

In the end, it’s up to the university how they price their courses. In our research we came across some institutions where all the courses we checked had the same tuition fee. This could be in the hope of attracting more applications to balance out the cost of expensive subjects. At these institutions, you really can study an MSc in Biological Science for the price of an MA in English Literature.

Why do postgraduate fees keep rising?

In recent years, university costs have risen. Unis must invest in the latest technology and provide support to ensure students get the best outcomes. Postgraduate students also want the benefit of the latest research, and your tuition fees may help to subsidise research at your university.

At the same time, some of the main income sources for universities have not risen in line with costs. This includes:

• UK undergraduate tuition fees being capped
• UK government funding cuts for undergraduate tuition
• UK research funding being squeezed

Publicly funded unis aren’t allowed to increase their tuition fees for undergraduates. However, they can set their own tuition fees for postgraduate study.

And while tuition fees for international students have always cost more, UK postgrad fees have increased at a higher rate. We ran a survey of UK university tuition fees for 15 years until 2021. In that time, UK postgraduate fees rose by 129% when compared with the average fee in 2006. International student fees grew by an average of 87% over the same period.

Top tips to find affordable postgraduate tuition

The following tips can help you to find the unis with the most affordable master’s:

• Rankings – top ranking unis can charge a premium, knowing that students are willing to pay what they charge because of their reputation. Look further down our league tables and you’re likely to find institutions offering lower tuition fees. Even universities with a good reputation don’t excel in every subject they offer, so it’s always worth shopping around. Check our subject tables to see how they compare.
• London factor – the capital isn’t the place to find inexpensive tuition as running costs are higher. However, some London unis will have lower fees than unis elsewhere.
• Specialists – small and specialist institutions have only a small pool of students to help cover their costs. They may not be able to offer discounted tuition fees.
• Online courses – if you don’t have to study your subject in person, see if you can find a course online. Online tuition is nearly always cheaper.
• Scholarships – don’t forget to check whether funding is available. Our university profiles have a section on student support, where unis can list their postgraduate scholarships. Alumni often get a discount, but you may need to progress straight into postgraduate study to benefit.

=10. Liverpool Hope University

Lowest fee: £7,500.

Tying in tenth place for the most inexpensive master’s fee are four universities.

Liverpool Hope has often been in our top ten unis for the best UK postgraduate fees. This year the uni’s fees range from £7,500–£13,000, with the lowest prices for MAs. Whether you choose Creative Music Practice or Disability Studies, the uni’s master’s degrees are underpinned by the expertise and research of academic staff.

=10. University of Sunderland

At Sunderland, humanities and social sciences have the most affordable master’s fees at £7,500. We found this price for MAs in Childhood and Youth Studies, Education, Journalism, and Law LLM, among others. Employers are involved in course design and lecturers have close links to their sector. You’ll gain workplace skills and knowledge to help you towards your future career and make your investment in master’s study worthwhile.

=10. University of the West of Scotland

Four unis from Scotland make our top ten – but then the Scots have a reputation for being good (or careful) with money. Unfortunately for students from the rest of the UK (RUK), the cheapest fees at this uni are only available to students from Scotland. Scottish students could study a Big Data MSc or Creative Media Practice MA for £7,500 – those from RUK will need to pay more.

=10. University of Wales Trinity Saint David

£7,500 is what you’ll pay to study a sports or exercise MA at UWTSD. Other master’s degrees at this uni cost slightly more, at £7,800. However, £7,800 is also the price for their MBA, making UWTSD the cheapest place in the UK to study a one-year MBA on campus. Locations include London and Birmingham as well as Swansea and other campuses across south Wales.

=8. Glasgow Caledonian University

Lowest fee: £7,300.

Unlike some other Scottish unis, Glasgow Caledonian doesn’t differentiate between Scotland and the rest of the UK, charging all UK students the same postgraduate rate. Fees do vary between subjects, but it’s not a simple distinction between MA and MSc. We found an MSc Medical Bioscience at £7,300 and an MA in Multimedia Journalism at the higher rate of £8,900. Courses have a real-world, practical focus, and may include professional accreditation.

=8. Queen's University Belfast

It’s always worth checking the prices at higher ranking institutions. Queen’s ranks 25 th in our 2025 league table, so it came as a surprise to find this Russell Group uni offering fees as low as £7,300 for a master’s degree. The catch is that you must be a resident of Northern Ireland or the Republic of Ireland to get this price. Still, fees for other UK students are also reasonable, at £9,250. Domestic/EU students can now be charged a maximum of £9,250 (~€10,830) for an undergraduate degree, while international undergraduate tuition fees vary considerably.

So, if you’re on a budget and looking for more affordable options, here are the 10 cheapest UK universities for international students, based on data from the Reddin Survey of University Tuition Fees 2018/19, conducted by  The Complete University Guide . All fees are for overseas students who started in 2018.

Of course, these fees are still high – but luckily there are plenty of  scholarships  available.

Annual international tuition fees:  £11,000  (~US$14,540)

If you want to study in Wales, the  University of Wales, Trinity Saint David  could be ideal, offering the cheapest tuition fees for international students in the country. It’s another young university, founded in 2010 through the merger of some of the oldest universities in Wales, the University of Wales, Lampeter (UWL) and Trinity University College (TUC).

Also featuring in the joint eighth among the cheapest UK universities in 2018/19,  Plymouth Marjon University  (known as Marjon for short) is a small university located just outside of Plymouth in southwest England. As well as boasting a green, leafy campus, Marjon offers small class sizes and all programs involve work placements of some degree.

Buckinghamshire New University  is the third institution to be tied for third place among the cheapest UK universities for international students, and is split across three campuses in High Wycombe, Uxbridge and Aylesbury. It’s a good option for those who want to be close to the sights and attractions of nearby London, without spending too much on tuition fees.

Annual international tuition fees:  £10,800–13,500  (~US$14,300-17,700)

Another good option for those with their sights set on studying in London,  Ravensbourne University London , a small institution in East Greenwich, is currently ranked within the top 150 of the  QS World University Rankings by Subject  for  art & design , and was awarded a 'Silver' in the UK government’s Teaching and Excellence Framework in 2017.

Another of the cheapest universities for international students is the  University of Sunderland , which has its roots in the Sunderland Technical College (founded 1901) and gained university status in 1992. As well as its two campuses in Sunderland, the university has a site in London, and recently opened a Hong Kong campus.

In the northwest, the  University of Cumbria  is another young university offering lower tuition fees than many other universities in the UK. Formed by a merger of previous universities in 2007, the university is continuing to grow academically as well as geographically.

Concluding our look at the cheapest universities in the UK is a new entrant,  Coventry University , which has fees as low as £9,000 for international undergraduates (in contrast, at the UK's highest-ranked university, the  University of Oxford , international undergraduate fees start at £24,750 per year). Ranked 571-580 in the  QS World University Rankings® 2019 , Coventry is one of the fastest growing UK universities, with around 31,700 students. Cheapest universities for international students are revealed in a 2016-17 tuition fee survey of 140 institutions.

The UK universities charging the lowest tuition fees to international students in 2016-17 have been revealed in a survey of postgraduate and undergraduate courses by TheCompleteUniversityGuide.

Although the cost of university varies across different subjects and is partially dependent on whether the course is classroom, laboratory or clinically based, the results published by Times Higher Education show the cheapest universities in the UK averaged for each type of course.

For undergraduate degrees based in a classroom, international students will pay at least £9,500 – the average annual cost of studying at the cheapest option: Bucks New University .

But the price range is wider for international postgraduates on taught degrees. The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, University of London , a taught degree will set an international student back anywhere between £5,724 and £19,890.

The full results of the tuition fee survey also compare the cost for UK and European Union students studying on classroom, laboratory, clinical and MBA courses.

Doctorate of public health (drph), the drph programme leads to a doctoral-level qualification and is intended for leaders and future leaders in public health..

The programme aims to equip its graduates with the experience to deal with the particular challenges of understanding and adapting scientific knowledge in order to achieve public health gains, as well as the analytical and practical skills required by managers and leaders in public health. The DrPH therefore has a dual focus on developing both expertise to conduct and evaluate research and skills crucial for leadership roles in public health policy and practice.

Entry criteria for the DrPH are the same as for the PhD except that evidence of relevant experience in areas of public health policy as well as in management or leadership is required. The rigour and volume of the work are doctoral level, and are appropriate to the personal development of senior public health professionals. Opportunities for undertaking the DrPH programme are available in all LSHTM's Faculties.

Taught component

The taught component consists of two compulsory modules. In “Understanding Leadership, Management and Organisations” students explore a range of issues and theories relating to management, leadership and organisations and consider the application of these theories both to public health organisations and their own management practice. “Evidence Based Public Health Policy” focuses on key skills required for improving and shaping policy and practice, involving accessing, understanding, developing, disseminating and facilitating the use of the evidence base for better public health outcomes. The modules are delivered between late September and December and we are currently trialling online delivery. We use a variety of teaching methods including lectures, seminars and small group work. Students are expected to learn through both directed and self-directed study. Modules are assessed through individual written assignments.

Students are not formally assessed on any other modules but should take modules from the Doctoral Transferable Skills Programme and may choose to study some MSc modules to cover particular skills relevant to their research. This enables students to tailor the programme to their individual backgrounds and needs.

Research Study I: Organisational or Policy Analysis (OPA) project

The OPA project involves research that provides DrPH students with the opportunity to observe and analyse the workings of a public health organisation in its policy environment and to gain a better understanding of how to develop effective public health organisations, influence public policy and deliver public health goals. The project usually involves 3-6 months fieldwork within a host organisation of the student’s choice, during which time the student may be formally employed by the organisation or may be present as an independent researcher.

The objectives of the project that contribute to the overreaching purpose will vary depending on the topic and chosen methodology. It is expected, however, that all OPA reports will cover the following generic objectives:

• To outline the context and key influences on policy (if applicable) in relation to the specific public health issue and organisation chosen for the project;
• To assess the extent to which organisational factors or external relationships constrain or enhance the organisation’s ability to deliver its mandate;
• To develop clear, actionable policy or practical recommendations to increase the effectiveness of the organisation in influencing or delivering its public health goals;
• To gain experience in applying policy science or organisational management theories to the critical analysis of a real world organisational case study.

The host organisation can be any public, non-profit or private institution that is engaged in public health practice or has a public health mandate. OPA projects can be undertaken inside or outside (recommended) the student’s normal place of work.

Students are expected to use an appropriate methodological approach. Data collection methods may include: observations, interviews, focus groups, surveys and documentary analysis. Appropriate approach to data analysis should be used, drawing upon recognised theoretical and analytical frameworks from the relevant fields, for example: management, organisational theory, policy analysis, political science or sociology.

The OPA project is assessed on the basis of a written report not exceeding 15,000 words examined internally by two independent assessors. The report is intended to provide practical advice to the host organisation or policy community in the form of a constructive critique, identifying areas for development or improvement and containing actionable recommendations. At the same time, the report must be soundly informed by literature, theory and robust data collection and analysis.

Progression to the OPA project component is subject to successful completion of the two compulsory core modules. The OPA project report is normally submitted for assessment before commencing the thesis element of the programme.

Research Study II: Thesis project

As for a PhD, the purpose of the DrPH thesis project is to enable students to develop as competent independent researchers and conduct original research. By the end of their studies students should be able to plan effectively and undertake independent research and will have developed key transferable skills. As with a PhD, the thesis topic can be from any public health-related discipline or subject area agreed with the student’s supervisor and the research must be original and make a distinct contribution to the knowledge of the chosen subject.

Research plans are assessed at a formal DrPH Review (equivalent to the “upgrading” for MPhil/PhD students). Whilst the DrPH research thesis must meet doctoral level standards, due to the time allocated for this component (typically about 18 months), the DrPH thesis is necessarily shorter in length and more limited in scope than a PhD thesis.

The DrPH thesis has a 60,000 word limit, excluding references and appendices. 

Programme duration

The period of study for full-time DrPH students is a minimum of three years and a maximum of four years (or four and eight years respectively under part-time study mode). Students are normally required to spend time at LSHTM during the preparation for their OPA project,  preparing and presenting their research project plans to a DrPH Review Committee, or at other key points during the course of the Programme, as agreed with their Supervisors or the Programme Directors. Over the course of their degree DrPH students are normally expected to spend at least 9 months full-time in London.

As the timetable of compulsory modules is fixed, all DrPH students need to commence the programme at the start of the UK academic year in September. The programme aims to be flexible to meet students’ needs while at the same time adhering to excellence in learning and research.

Part-time study

LSHTM requires students who apply for part-time study to be available to study for at least two days per week (not including weekends). Where applicable, a letter from your employer is required to confirm that at least two days per week will be permitted for work on your degree. Please note that in Term 1 part-time DrPH students should allow a minimum of 2.5 days a week for each module they are studying.

Note that the two compulsory modules are taught in the first term. Part-time students have the option of taking one module in their first year and the other module at the beginning of their second year. However, because students are not permitted to start the main phase of their OPA research until both modules have been completed, this can introduce a delay into the overall progression of the degree (students are able to carry out preparatory activities for their OPA and/or research thesis elements between modules but are not able to begin data collection). Consequently many part-time students elect to take both core modules together, effectively increasing their workload temporarily to a full-time mode, followed by a period of a few months without any formal tuition, allowing them to re-balance their other commitments.

Academic requirements

A student must normally satisfy the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine general entrance requirements as follows:

The normal  minimum  entrance qualification for registration at the School on a Doctoral programme is evidence of an aptitude for research and at least one of the following:

• a master’s degree in a subject appropriate to the course of study to be followed  (recommended)
• a qualification appropriate to the course of study to be followed, in medicine, dentistry or veterinary studies
• an upper second-class honours degree from a UK university, or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard, in a relevant subject.

Applicants for the DrPH study are also required to have a minimum of two years' appropriate experience .

We have a limited number of places on the DrPH programme (20/year). To ensure equity, all applications will be reviewed by a cross-Faculty panel of senior academics. They will consider your work experience, your academic potential, and your research proposal, OPA proposal and personal statement.

DrPH candidates, like students on other doctoral programmes, work closely with academic members of staff who act as their supervisors. It is not essential to have identified a supervisor before applying, but applicants can only be accepted once a suitable supervisory team has been identified and approved. If you apply for a place without already having identified named supervisors then LSHTM will try to match you up with suitable members of academic staff. If we are unable to identify potential supervisors, we will not be able to offer you a place.

The research proposal

All applicants should include with their application a short proposal for their thesis research, Research Study II, (maximum 1,500 words including footnotes and references). This is an important way of indicating the extent to which you already understand the background to your proposed research, and the range of methods that may be employed.

This should include:

• Research / topic area
• Specific research question(s)
• Study design
• Data collection methods and analysis
• Approximate research costs and planned funding source

Please be aware that the research proposal submitted with your application does not have to be the final research project: you will have the opportunity to refine your project through discussions with your supervisor after you start. The main purpose of the proposal is to demonstrate that you have the necessary critical thinking skills, an understanding of the relevant research area and an appreciation of the demands of a research degree.

The organisational and/or policy analysis outline (OPA, Research Study I)

Applicants also need to submit a short outline plan (approx. 500 words) for their OPA project (topic for the OPA, methodological approach and type of organisation to target). While many students have a clear idea about where they intend to carry out their OPA project, it is not mandatory to identify a specific host organisation before starting the degree programme at LSHTM. It is appreciated that this information will be preliminary and that proposals may change once applicants have started their studies and have had the opportunity to discuss their OPA plans with their supervisor and DrPH teaching staff. 

Think about how your Research Degree will be funded

You will need to consider how the Research Degree will be funded – tuition fees, living expenses and project costs. The School website contains some further information on potential  sources of funding . Some candidates apply for a place via studentships advertised by the School. Others manage to secure funding from elsewhere prior to applying, and some submit funding applications at the same time as applying for the research degree.

• Home Student Scholarships are fully funded, meaning we will pay course fees, a stipend of £20,622 per year for three years, and a training and development allowance of £5000 over three years. We will award ten of these fellowships.
• Home Match-Funded Scholarships which are funded through a 50% contribution to course fees, stipend and £5000 training and development allowance from industry partners and the remaining 50% contribution from LSBU for three years. We will award three of these fellowships.

Duration of Scholarships

The Scholarships are full-time. It is expected that those awarded Scholarships will submit their thesis no later than three years from enrolment.

There are three entry points each year: January, April, and September.

Current scholarships

About the project.

The project investigates innovative cements capable of absorbing CO 2 as they form, for civil engineering and energy infrastructure applications, towards carbon neutrality zero net targets. Particular emphasis will be given to biological cements -biocements or enzymatic cements for underground applications which can include geotechnics, energy engineering but also concrete, linking to previous and ongoing research projects of the supervisory team members.

Academic entry requirements and eligibility

Applicants should have a minimum of an upper second class undergraduate degree, and ideally hold, or expect to achieve a merit or distinction in a master’s degree in a relevant subject from a UK university, or comparable qualifications from another recognised university. The applicants should be interested in multidisciplinary research, combining chemistry, microbiology, material analysis and behaviour with civil and energy engineering. They should have interest, and ideally experience in laboratory and field testing, as well as numerical modelling skills. Preferred candidates will have a background at post graduate level in ground engineering and will have experience with soil testing, and biocements. However other relevant qualifications and experience will also be considered.

Duration of Scholarship

Full Time. We are targetting a September 2024 Start. Those awarded scholarships must submit their thesis by three years from enrolment.

4.      Shortlisted candidates will be invited for an online interview the first days of August (1-5 August) 2024. The interview will assess the following:

• Knowledge and understanding of the research field, research methods and background pertinent to the project. Be prepared to contribute your views on proposed methods of the selected project.
• Reasons and motivations for undertaking a research degree and passion for the research topic
• Why you want to do a PhD at LSBU
• Ability for completing a PhD within the agreed time.
• Personal attributes such as creativity, confidence, tenacity, motivation, time management.
• Training and development need to undertake and compete a PhD successfully
• Additional needs necessary to complete the PhD successfully
• Your future career plans
• Other supporting information: recent publications if any or other research training and experience

5.      We will inform you of the outcome of your application within one week of your interview.

See sheep driven over Southwark Bridge

One of London's wackiest annual events is the Sheep Drive and Livery Fair , taking place on Sunday. Each year, a chosen celebrity has the honour of herding sheep over Southwark Bridge, a nod back to the time when Smithfield was London's major livestock market. The baa-rmy happenings on the bridge are free to watch (get there early if ewe want a good view) and are followed by a livery market at the north end of the bridge. This year, Damian Lewis is the celebrity shepherd.

Also taking place in the City on Sunday, the London Pearly Kings and Queens Costermongers Harvest Festival brings together pearly kings and queens from across London and beyond for a gathering in Guildhall Yard, followed by a church service at St Mary-le-Bow on Cheapside. There will likely be charity collections taking place, so worth having a few quid on you to make a donation if you can.

Global superstar Kylie Minogue is bringing her Tension Tour to Liverpool's M&S Bank Arena. So far, one date has been confirmed for Thursday, May 22 2025.

Kylie's pre-sale kicked off this morning for fans who registered their interest or pre-purchased the Tension II album. The general public sale is available from Friday, September 27, at 10am. Those with access to the pre-sale can checkout anytime between now and Friday so long as tickets remain available.

Tickets vary depending on location, with the cheapest beginning at £77.50 for the furthest perimeter of the arena. Seats closest to the stage cost £190.25. Tickets for the Sodexo Live! Lounge (VIP) cost £265.
