Sample question with answer for IELTS Writing task 2 Agree disagree essay writing
Here is a sample question with an answer for reference, you can consider practising with questions like these to score higher in your IELTS Writing test :
You should spend about 40 minutes on this task. Write about the following topic. The first car appeared on British roads in 1888. By the year 2000, there may be as many as 29 million vehicles on British roads. Alternative forms of transport should be encouraged, and international laws introduced to control car ownership and use. To what extent do you agree or disagree? Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your knowledge or experience. Write at least 250 words.
The increase in the number of cars on British roads, from the first car in 1888 to millions by 2000, has led to significant environmental and logistical issues. I strongly agree that alternative forms of transport should be encouraged, and international laws introduced to control car ownership and use.
Cars are major contributors to air pollution, which harms both the environment and public health. Promoting public transport, cycling, and walking can reduce the number of vehicles on the road, lowering pollution levels. For example, cities like Amsterdam have successfully reduced pollution by encouraging cycling.
Traffic congestion is another serious problem caused by the high number of cars. This not only wastes time but also increases stress and fuel consumption. By encouraging the use of public transport, we can reduce congestion, making travel more efficient.
International laws to control car ownership could include higher taxes on car purchases or stricter emission standards. In Singapore, such measures have led to a significant reduction in car ownership, with more people relying on efficient public transport.
In conclusion, the growing number of vehicles on the road poses serious environmental and logistical challenges. Encouraging alternative forms of transport and introducing international laws to regulate car ownership are essential for a more sustainable future. Therefore, I fully agree with these measures.
