The job market is evolving rapidly. More rapidly than I can even keep up with. Last year, I left a career in finance, healthcare, and digital publishing to dive into the world of higher education, and I've been able to see first-hand how quickly things are evolving in this industry.

For instance, did you know that Gen Z is actively moving toward blue-collar careers because of the rising cost of education and increased burden of student debt? Because of these factors (among many others), people are questioning if the value of higher education is there anymore.

Just last year, the World Economic Forum did a study that showed many Americans think college degrees are less relevant now (and too expensive). It also showed that only 37.1% of 25 to 44-year-olds in the United States hold a bachelor's degree. Additionally, roughly 33% of students drop out before completing their degrees.

The Rising Cost of College

Over the past few decades, the cost of higher education has soared. According to the College Board , the average annual tuition for a four-year, public university in the 2022-2023 academic year was 11,260 for in-state students and 29,150 for out-of-state students (a 2.5% and 3% increase, respectively, before adjusting for inflation).

For private universities, the average tuition was a staggering $41,540 per year. These figures do not include additional expenses such as room, board, and textbooks, which can add several thousand dollars to the total cost.

As a result of these rising costs, student debt has become a significant financial burden for many graduates. According to the Federal Reserve, the total student loan debt in the United States reached $1.73 trillion in 2023, with the average borrower owing around $37,000. That number came down a bit when looking at the first quarter of 2024, where student loan debt sat at $1.6 trillion.

This debt can have long-term implications, affecting students' ability to make financial moves like buying homes, starting families, and saving for retirement.

Evaluating the ROI of a College Degree

Despite the high costs, many still believe that a college degree is a worthwhile investment. In fact, the New York Fed did research last year to show that the average ROI on a bachelor's degree was about 14% — which significantly exceeds the ROI of something like an index fund in most years.

Additionally, a recent report by Inside Higher Ed indicated that about 83% of colleges provide a minimum economic return, meaning their graduates earn enough to recoup their college investment within ten years. This percentage is even higher for public institutions.

The key to understanding its value lies in evaluating the ROI, which involves comparing the costs of obtaining a degree with the financial benefits it provides over a lifetime.

Earnings Premium

One of the primary arguments in favor of higher education is the earnings premium it provides. According to data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) , individuals with a bachelor's degree earn, on average, 1,305 per week, compared to $781 per week for those with only a high school diploma. Over a 40-year career, this translates to a difference of more than 1 million in lifetime earnings.

Unemployment Rates

Higher education also correlates with lower unemployment rates. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) , as of May 2024, the unemployment rate for individuals with a bachelor's degree or higher is 2.0%, compared to 4.1% for those with only a high school diploma. This job security can be an important factor in the long-term financial stability of degree holders.

Factors Influencing the ROI

While the earnings premium and lower unemployment rates suggest that a college degree can be financially beneficial, you have to remember that the ROI of higher education is not uniform across all fields of study and institutions. There are several factors that influence the financial return on a degree:

Field of Study

The choice of major significantly impacts the ROI of a college degree. STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields typically offer higher starting salaries and greater lifetime earnings compared to majors in the arts, humanities, or social sciences.

For example, a report by Georgetown University's Center on Education and the Workforce found that engineering majors had a median annual salary of $85,000, while those with degrees in the arts earned a median salary of $49,000.

Institution Type and Reputation

The type and reputation of the institution also play a critical role in determining the return on investment. Graduates from prestigious universities like Harvard and Yale often have access to better job opportunities and higher salaries.

In fact, according to recent data from Harvard Business School , the median base salary for Harvard MBA graduates is $175,000, with additional signing and performance bonuses significantly boosting their total compensation packages.

Additionally, Yale School of Management graduates also report a median base salary of $175,000, with regional variations showing even higher median salaries in certain parts of the U.S.

However, these institutions also tend to have higher tuition costs. For the 2024-2025 academic year, Yale's undergraduate tuition is $67,250 , with total costs including housing and meals reaching 56,550, with total costs including housing, food, and other fees amounting to $82,866.

So, it's extremely important to weigh the potential earnings benefits against the increased costs of attending a top-tier school. Not to mention how difficult and time-consuming applying for and getting into these types of schools is.

Geographic Location

Where you live can influence both the cost of education and the potential earnings. For example, colleges and universities in urban areas tend to have higher tuition fees, but graduates may also find better-paying job opportunities in these locations.

On the other hand, going to a lower-cost college or university in a more rural area might limit job prospects but reduce overall educational expenses (depending on where you go).

For example, I went to two different colleges —- I started at Ohio University, which is located in Athens, Ohio. It's what I'd consider to be a "college town," otherwise in the middle of nowhere, and unless you're working for the university, there aren't many job opportunities there.

I finished my degree and my MBA at Cleveland State University, however. While a lesser-known school, it was located in the heart of downtown Cleveland, surrounded by local, national, and international employers. So there were far more options for me there.

The return on investment of higher education is a complex and multifaceted issue. While a college degree often leads to higher earnings individually and lower unemployment rates economically, the financial benefits can vary widely, based on factors like your field of study, institution type, and geographic location. Additionally, the rising cost of tuition and the burden of student debt can't be overlooked.

For those considering higher education, it's important to do thorough research and carefully evaluate the potential financial outcomes. Exploring alternative education paths can also provide viable options for achieving financial success without the seemingly massive expense of a traditional four-year degree.

MANHATTAN — Kansas State University and U.S. Sen. Jerry Moran announced on Monday a $7 million federal investment to support the university's Biomanufacturing Training and Education Initiative, a comprehensive program designed to position Kansas as a national leader in biomanufacturing and biosecurity. K-State's innovative ecosystem fosters collaboration between academia, industry and research to make significant strides in animal health, food security and public safety. Through the initiative, the university is establishing itself as a hub for industry partnerships and workforce development, which are critical to solving challenges in both human and animal health. "As Kansas continues to grow its animal health corridor, Kansas State University is uniquely equipped to train the workforce needed for this industry," Moran said. The Biomanufacturing Core and Training Facility is one of four state-of-the-art facilities integral to the initiative. It will also provide hands-on training for the next generation of biosecurity researchers to ensure that Kansas remains at the forefront of biomanufacturing expertise. This initiative enhances both the agricultural and public health sectors, ensuring a safer, more prosperous future. Admission criteria.

The admission criteria have been grouped to assist you to easily find the information most relevant to your circumstances. However, you may fit into more than one and the university will consider applicants against each of the relevant criteria.

Applicants are required to meet one of the following criteria with a competitive result, and demonstrate that they fulfil any prerequisite requirements and essential requirements for admission:

Recent secondary education Meet any prerequisite requirements with a minimum grade of C- or equivalent AND Qualify for the South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE), and achieved a competitive Selection Rank (ATAR), or Complete secondary qualifications equivalent to SACE, or Complete the International Baccalaureate Diploma with a minimum score of 24 points Applicants who have not achieved the Selection Rank required for automatic selection may be selected for any remaining places based on the grades of their year 12 subjects.

The Diploma in Education Studies is a one-year program that prepares you for university study while getting you ready to guide future generations in their early years. If you don’t meet the direct entry requirements for the degree you want to study, this pathway program may be perfect for you. You’ll build academic skills, university knowledge and confidence in your first year of study, while having support from UniSA College staff to then make the transition into your chosen related bachelor's degree. Once you complete a Diploma in Education Studies, you can continue your studies in either Early Childhood or Primary Education.

What you'll learn

You will study a combination of discipline specific courses that will develop your academic skills, along with up to two first-year courses from your related bachelor’s degree. This will give you  real insight into your preferred degree and up to two study credits (conditions apply).

Degree structure

1. Students are required to complete the diploma within 2 years to transfer into an undergraduate degree, subject to competitive entry. Students who do not transfer into an undergraduate degree within this time will be required to apply via SATAC.

2. Commencing students may have their enrolments withdrawn if they fail to engage with their studies (Enrolment policy A48 section 4.5).

3. This program requires weekly participation in all enrolled courses. Student engagement is monitored, with a lack of participation or contact with student support services and/or the Program Director resulting in students being unenrolled from courses they have not engaged with. This action will occur in week 3, prior to census, to ensure students' future program performance (cumulative GPA) is protected.

1. Students must complete one elective per semester, alternate elective choices must be discussed with the Program Director to ensure they comply with the program requirements of their future bachelor degree.

Your study schedule will be divided into the time you spend attending classes and watching lectures as well as independent study, including your personal research and assignment work.

Why Diploma in Education Studies

You will be fully supported when choosing courses within your program so that you are confident and ready to transition into your desired area of study. You can book one-on-one appointments with the helpful UniSA College staff for enrolment/study support, or access individual Program Director appointments and consultations with academic staff in the UniSA College Common Room. You will also be taught by highly experienced academics from UniSA.

You will experience elements of your undergraduate degree by completing up to two courses within a diploma. This will provide insight into how your intended study journey might look so you can make sure it’s right for you!

Online study

Studying externally (online) gives you the flexibility to study where and when you want, at your own pace. All of the courses offered through UniSA College can be studied online. You can choose your study mode when you enrol. With interactive online course materials and a 24/7 digital environment, you can also:

• access your lectures online, plus study and course resources
• submit your assignments and get feedback
• use forums and discussion boards for teamwork and communication

Further Study

After successfully completing your Diploma, you'll graduate with a standalone qualification and you can then apply for direct entry, via UniSA College, into your chosen bachelor’s degree using your Grade Point Average (GPA).

Alternative Pathways

Students can also apply for the Diploma in Education Studies upon completion of the UniSA Foundation Studies program (DFFS) if they do not meet the requirements for direct entry.

This degree is available for deferment. This option is made available by responding to your offer during the application process via the SATAC website. Applicants who receive an offer into a midyear degree are eligible to defer for six months.

The way you apply for UniSA will depend on the undergraduate or postgraduate coursework degree you're interested in studying. The majority of applications are made via the South Australian Tertiary Admissions Centre ( SATAC ). Check out more information on the SATAC website and follow the appropriate process for your degree of interest. There are a small number of degrees that you need to apply for through direct application processes. The process you need to follow will be listed on the 'How to Apply' section of the degree homepage, but you'll also be taken to where you need to go if you hit the 'apply' button. If you are interested in studying one of our 100% online degrees you'll need to apply directly to  UniSA Online. You can find more information about the application processes for UniSA on our  How to Apply webpage . If you're more interested in applying for a postgraduate degree by research, check out and follow the information in  our step by step guide to applying . 

Applications for all degrees will close ahead of study commencing, but the timelines may vary for undergraduate and postgraduate degrees.

Undergraduate

The deadline to apply to study a degree at UniSA for semester one (commencing late February) and be guaranteed equal consideration is generally in very late November or early December. While you may be able to apply after this date, you are not guaranteed to be considered equally with other applicants and your application may not be assessed in time for the main round of offers. More competitive degrees may not make any offers after the main offer round. Postgraduate

Many postgraduate by coursework degrees do not have set closing dates. The exceptions are highly competitive degrees, so it is best to check – either on the degree homepage on the SATAC website or by checking with our Future Student Enquiries team.

As most postgraduate applications are assessed as they are submitted and offers are continuous, there are no set closing dates for applications. Degrees can be filled and closed with little notice so it is best to apply as soon as possible to avoid missing out on a place. You may be eligible for credit or advanced standing for your chosen UniSA degree based on your previous studies, if they are in a related area and completed within a certain timeframe. Receiving credit or RPL will reduce the number of courses you undertake within the degree, and may also reduce the overall duration of your degree. You can read more about our pre-existing credit agreements through our online  Credit Assessor.  If you have related industry experience, you may also be eligible to receive recognised prior learning (RPL) for this experience. Credit and RPL is assessed by the Program Director once you've received an offer, and you apply through UniSA's current student experts, Campus Central.

Vice-Chancellor's statement to Senate Committee hearing

Professor Scott’s opening address is below.

“This is vitally important legislation. It goes centrally to the quality of education provided in Australian universities for international and domestic students. It goes to the strength of a sector that is an engine room of the Australian economy. And to the remarkable opportunities, through soft power and public diplomacy, of educating the next generation of regional leaders.

“International students are currently tracking to make up just about 50 percent of the total student number at the University of Sydney this semester. In Semester 2, international student enrolments will be 2.4 percent higher than in Semester 1. We always have an increase in the second semester as it is peak enrolment time for students from the northern hemisphere.

“When I started at the University in 2021, I saw that its governing body, the Senate, had considered the matter carefully and felt around 50 percent represented a ceiling for international students we should enrol despite continuing robust demand and remarkable affirmation of our programs across the region. Our era of solid growth in international students was drawing to a close.

“Great global universities are, almost by definition, international universities. UK universities like Oxford, Imperial and UCL have around the same percentage of international students as Sydney. The famed London School of Economics, higher still.

“At Sydney, for some years now, we have not planned to move further beyond where we are now.

“We are now focused on more nuanced settings. When considering the optimised student mix, what is far more relevant is the percentage of international students at an undergraduate and postgraduate level, the mix of disciplines, considerations around the country of origin, and the quality of candidates. These are all matters we are working intently on.

“The Accord report demonstrated conclusively that the funding mechanisms for both teaching and research at Australian universities are fundamentally broken and totally inadequate. They represent a profound failure in public policy over recent decades. International students have helped meet these entrenched chronic funding gaps: for the betterment of Australian students – meeting the full cost of courses like medicine and dentistry, providing infrastructure for all to use, and allowing Australia to have a quality system of R&D, despite embarrassingly low levels of government and industry R&D expenditure compared to OECD standards.

“The flow of international students has helped create one of the finest higher education systems in the world despite its challenges.

“Powers in this bill could put that at risk – not just to educational cost but to very significant economic cost.

“The economic analysis looks clear. For every two international students we stop coming to the country, we could expect to see one domestic job lost.

“We have already seen the market spooked by the highly arbitrary implementation of Ministerial Directive 107 and the hike in non-refundable visa application fees.

“Treasury commentary suggests the additional powers sought in this bill are not required to meet migration targets.

“It is rare for there to be such important legislation on a vital national resource, the long-term impact on Australian higher education, with such clear implications for the strength of our economy and our international reputation.

“The unprecedented, sweeping powers sought in this legislation loom as an extraordinary act of self-harm to the Australian economy and one of our most vibrant and successful export industries.”
