Senior Project (EEE/ETE-498) Research Proposal Sample
The increasing demand of global energy for human being, decreasing availability of natural energy sources and concern about global climate change necessitate the development of green energy technologies, and has put the renewable energy in the forefront of global issues. The renewable energy sources such as solar, wind and hydropower generates clean electricity that is alternative of fossil fuels. Solar energy is an important type of renewable energy source that produce direct current (DC) power. Power electronics play an important role for integrating present day's renewable energy into our daily life as an inverter is essential to convert DC power to alternating current (AC) power due to supply the solar power to the grid. Due to rapid development and increasing use of renewable energy, highly efficient and cost effective equipment such as pure sine wave inverter, charge controller, etc. are highly demanded in the local as well as global market. This research proposal addresses such an issue to design and develop a grid-tie inverter using an advanced modulation technique, called harmonic injection modulation (HIM) to generate power using solar panel and feeding it to the existing power grid. 6. Goals and Objectives The objective of the proposed research is to design and develop a stable, reliable, compact, efficient and cost effective constant current grid-tie inverter for photovoltaic applications.

The conventional line commutated ac-to-dc converters/ inverters have square-shaped line current which contains higher-order harmonics. Moreover, it requires a costly and bulky dc inductor/ choke. The line current with the high harmonic contents generates EMI and therefore it causes more heating of the core of distribution/ power transformers. Alternatively, PWM based inverters using MOSFET/IGBT switches can be used for the above purpose. However, apart from higher switching losses, the power handling capability and reliability of these devices are quite low in comparison to thyristors/ SCR. A thyristor based forced commutated inverters are not suitable for PWM applications due to the problems of commutation circuits. A pure sinusoidal voltage output or waveform with low harmonic contents is most desirable in the conversion from dc to ac. In the present work, a novel two pulse line commutated inverter is been proposed. It improves the wave shape hence it reduces the total harmonic distortion (THD) of the grid interactive-inverter. Moreover, the performance of the proposed circuitry is far better than the conventional line-commutated inverter. It reduces THD, number of thyristors and dispenses with the bulky dc inductor/ choke. The simulation of the circuit is done using SIMULINK software. Finally, the circuit is realized and experimental results verify the performance of the circuit.

In this article solar power systems architecture along with the brief overview of the DC to AC inverters and their utilization as a power electronics device in solar photovoltaic systems is provided. The study provides details regarding the types of the inverters, single phase half bridge inverters, single phase full phase inverters and three phase inverters. As pulse width modulation (PWM) is widely used in inverters which works as a solar charge controllers so the principles of PWM along with carrier based and carrier less modulation techniques is also mentioned. A comprehensive simulation and implementation of a three phase PWM inverter in Simulink Matlab is also provided.

This paper proposes a topology for a transformer-less, pure sine wave grid-tie inverter (GTI) for photovoltaic (PV) application. The proposed GTI employs a dual-stage boost converter, a transformer-less step down circuit, an H-bridge inverter and a T-LCL Immittance conversion circuit. The switching technique of the proposed inverter consists of a combination of sinusoidal pulse width modulation (SPWM) and a square wave along with grid synchronizing conditions. As the suggested method is entirely transformer-less, it significantly reduces the total harmonic distortion (THD) of the output voltage (less than 0.1%), minimizes its size and swells the inverter efficiency up to 97%. The T-LCL Immittance conversion circuit not only reduces the harmonics of the inverter output but also provides a nearly constant output current thereby stabilizing the system rapidly. The overall performance of the proposed inverter is simulated using PSIM using the designed values of circuit components. The simulation results show that the proposed inverter is capable of not only eliminating harmonics but is also highly efficient, compact and cost effective.
An inverter circuit by using Sinusoidal Pulse Width Modulation (SPWM) switching schemes is developed to run AC utilities. Inverter is a circuit that converts a DC source to an AC source. DC is one type of energy that is found in solar panels and can be stored in ...

Solar energy is considered as fastest growing renewable energy source after wind energy for electricity generation. Solar energy is a free, clean abundant sun energy considered as inexhaustible source for electricity generation. Solar photovoltaic system is characterised with variable output power due to its operation dependency on solar irradiance and cell temperature. To maximize the energy generation potential of solar PV, research effort is focused on solar cell manufacturing technology to increase its generation efficiency and exploring advancement in power electronic devices for small and large scale deployment. Presented in this paper is a single phase inverter with no transformer for solar PV application. A closed loop DC-DC boost converter that accepts wide input DC voltage from 40 V – 60 V to produce constant 330 V DC voltage is modelled in Matlab/Simulink. An H-bridge 2-level inverter was used to convert the DC voltage to chopped AC voltage which was then filtered to give pure sinusoidal AC of 230 V RMS. The output voltage of the inverter has a very low total harmonic distortion of less than 1 % which makes the system suitable for local AC load and grid connection.

PhD Thesis Proposal
Each student who successfully completes the PhD qualifying examination is required to write a PhD thesis proposal, and present and defend the proposal orally before a committee.
As indicated on the Schedule for Timely PhD Completion , ECE doctoral students are expected to achieve candidacy before the end of their fifteenth month of studies.
- May starters must complete the PhD thesis proposal by July of the following year.
- September starters must complete the PhD thesis proposal by November of the following year.
- January starts must complete the PhD thesis proposal by March of the following year.
Format and Content of the Proposal
Please review the following guidelines and suggestions for the format and content of the PhD thesis proposal. The PhD thesis proposal should contain two fundamental components:
- review of the “state of the art” in a reasonably focused contemporary area of electrical and computer engineering research;
- outline of known problems to be solved or original developments that might be anticipated, accompanied by a line of approach to these problems or developments.
The “state of the art” review must refer explicitly to the relevant literature, with all references listed at the end of the proposal. The list of references need not be long, but it should be carefully considered. The list and review should show clear evidence that the student has sufficient knowledge to continue immediately into doctoral level research that will potentially lead to new results, without needing to do further background preparation in the area.
The outline of problems or developments must show that the student can formulate a line of research, including initial methodologies to be used, which should lead to significant contributions and new knowledge.
It is neither necessary nor expected that the PhD thesis proposal contain new research results, though such would be welcome. It is only necessary to be convincing that the chosen proposed area and topic of research has a very good chance of leading to new results.
PhD Thesis Proposal Committee
The supervisor will select professors to serve on the PhD thesis proposal committee according to the following regulations:
- The committee must consist of at least three professors, including the supervisor.
- Ideally, all committee members will hold a graduate faculty membership in ECE.
- One of the committee members may hold a graduate faculty membership in a unit other than ECE, where appropriate for the thesis topic.
PhD Thesis Proposal Presentation
- The supervisor will schedule the presentation. All members of the PhD thesis proposal committee must attend the presentation.
- The written proposal must be submitted to the committee at least two weeks prior to the presentation.
- The student will make a presentation at the meeting and orally defend the PhD thesis proposal.
- If the committee does not consider the proposal to be satisfactory, the student must present and defend a new PhD thesis proposal within four months. If the new proposal is also unsatisfactory, the student’s registration in the PhD program will be terminated.
- The supervisor must submit the PhD Thesis Proposal Report to the ECE Graduate Office within one week of the presentation.
- Upon the successful completion of the PhD thesis proposal, the student will have achieved “PhD candidacy.” The date of PhD candidacy will be recorded on the student’s U of T transcript.
