The PhD program in Environmental Science is the branch of study where students can find a number of ways to protect the environment with the reliable use of resources.
Ques. Are there demands for PhD Environmental Science degree holders?
Ans . Yes, PhD Environmental Science graduates are in huge demand now and will be in future too. Our environment is getting polluted and contaminated because of the development of humans. It is getting necessary to maintain proper standards and take necessary measures to control it. Therefore the demand of the researches in Environmental science is highly required to protect our mother earth.
Ques. Can PhD Environmental Science Graduates make their career in private sectors?
Ans . Yes, they can make their career in the private sectors. Since the industries have to find ways for waste disposal without harming the environment. So they hire such graduates to work for their waste disposal or to find ways to reuse the waste material in some way. These measures are necessary otherwise the government can shut down such industries.
Ques. What are the top colleges for the PhD Environmental Science program?
Ans . The top institutes and colleges for the PhD Environmental Science program are Banaras Hindu University, Amity University, Jawaharlal Nehru University, University of Calcutta, Banasthali Vidyapeeth, among others.
Ques. What is the scope after a PhD Environmental Science degree?
Ans . There are various job opportunities for environmental scientists. They can work as environmental biologists, environmental engineers, environmental modelers, and environmental journalists. After completion of PhD in Environmental science, they can work as independent environmental consultants or work for any consultancy. For example, ecological consultancies like RAMKY, ENZEN, etc.
Ques. What are the areas of employment in the PhD Environmental Science field?
Ans . Several areas of employment are there such as students can work at Academic Institutes, Environment Protection Companies, Water Treatment Plants, Agriculture Sector, Weather Departments, Environment Content Writings, National Parks & Wildlife Sanctuaries, Waste Management Plants, etc.
Ques. Which is better: PhD Environmental Science or PhD Environmental Engineering?
Ans . Both the courses are good and have their distinct areas of study in the field of environmental science. If a candidate wants to choose one of these, then it depends on the academic background and the interest of the student. As the student from an engineering field can choose to do any of the courses but the one who has completed MSc or MPhil in any of the science backgrounds may be able to opt for only PhD Environmental Science.
Ques. Can PhD Environmental Science degree holders start their own business?
Ans . Of Course they can start their own business. There have been various start-ups that have been working on environmental issues by finding creative solutions to the problems. Some of them are making use of the waste material and making money out of it. Since the PhD holders are knowledgeable enough to find solutions to the environmental problems, they can start such businesses and can also get funded by the government.
Ques. Are teaching jobs worth it in the field of Environmental Science?
Ans . Environmental Science or Disaster Management are courses that the students are studying from class 5 to their graduation. The Government of India has made these subjects mandatory in every course of study. This is not just a course to study, this is a course to learn and implement to make our earth a better place. Therefore becoming an Environmental Science Professor will be beneficial.

Leading Premier Institute for Forestry Education in India. Doing Phd from here will open up many avenues as I work in Forest Ecology and Climate Change Division. The reputed holds name in providing forestry education from a very long time and experienced scientists and the college atmosphere is exemplary. The institute is situated in the foothills of Shivalik range of Himalayas which is rich in its biodiversity.
Placements is decent as many students opt for Higher degrees so placement is not given such importance because In biological sciences field people opt for PhD programs mainly and those who opt for job are settled in MNC that design biomedical instruments, patent companies, life sciences organisations, pharmaceutical companies etc.
Internships opportunities.
No. For the terms of stipend, I called it they are not giving any single rupee for internship. Even Ph.D. students are not getting any single rupee. Its too annoying that its a state government university and even Ph.D student re not getting any stipend. On the other side some central government Universities and IITs are getting from 25,000 to 70,000. Its to unevenly distribution of money. I think it should also one of the most important issues for students, rather to focus on research or earning the money. Its all political issues.
As per state government university fees structure is too much. Just like private universities. So if some poor student who came to university to take an admission by hearing the government university but they can not afford it. We have many time ask to the administration but in return we only got the answer is that its a new university.

The Department of Environmental Studies at NYU Arts & Science is launching a new Environmental Studies PhD , with classes to begin for a highly selective cohort of five students in fall 2025. Three research tracks based around food and land use systems, ecological systems, and governance systems will equip students with the skills and knowledge to tackle environmental and societal problems ranging from climate change to biodiversity loss from a variety of angles. The interdisciplinary program is intended for applicants from a wide range of backgrounds and a common commitment to environmental engagement.
Environmental Studies PhD candidates will be required to take seven core courses and at least five specialized electives supporting their independent research, culminating in the defense of a unique dissertation. Through the Inter-University Doctoral Consortium, students will also be eligible to take select courses at other universities. Environmental Studies PhD candidates will receive full tuition funding and a stipend.
The Department of Environmental Studies has grown in size and scope in recent years, offering the new PhD candidates—and all students—enhanced opportunities for research avenues and mentorship with distinguished faculty whose expertise draw from the natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities. The department offers a bachelor’s degree and undergraduate minor in Environmental Studies; a BA-MA, master’s degree, and undergraduate minor in Animal Studies; and an undergraduate minor in Environmental Humanities.
In 2025, the department will move into a spacious new home on Washington Square East, at the heart of NYU’s campus. Nearly 18k square feet on two floors of Goddard Hall will house dedicated office and classroom spaces, and bring all the department’s programs together for the first time.
Associate Professor of Environmental Studies David Kanter will direct the new PhD program. “We are very excited to launch this path breaking PhD program which will prepare the next generation of environmental experts to take on the world’s biggest problems with rigor, passion and a transdisciplinary toolkit. We can’t wait to welcome the first cohort of students in fall 2025.”
Applications for the fall 2025 PhD cohort will be accepted September 18 through December 15, 2024. For questions about the program, contact [email protected] .
