Preparing a Thesis Statement Concerning a Job Interview

A job interview is your one chance to make an in-person impression with a company when seeking a job. One way to improve your chances of getting an interview is to have a strong resume and cover letter. Adding a thesis statement to the top of your resume or cover letter is an effective way to summarize your skills and desire for the job. Be sure that your thesis stands out and makes the manager want to learn more about you.

A thesis statement is a brief account appearing at the beginning of a written piece making a claim and summarizing a particular topic view. In terms of a job interview, a thesis statement is going to summarize your abilities, what you are looking for in a job, and why you are qualified. Since the statement is short, it can't provide a whole lot of detail. Rather, it should intrigue the reader and give just enough information that a hiring manager wants to read more about you.

Skills and Abilities

Your thesis statement should highlight your main skills and abilities relating to the job you are applying for. For example, if you're applying for a role in accounting, you might mention your credentials as a Certified Public Accountant. The description of your skills and abilities should be directly related to the main job requirements. The hiring manager should have no doubt of your skill set after reading the thesis statement and can look to your resume for additional detail.

Briefly describe your interest and passion in the field for which you are applying. If you're seeking an engineering position, for example, you might highlight your passion for problem solving or mechanics. If you're applying for a marketing position you can describe your sales and creative skills. Forbes suggests that you will have a good chance at getting an interview if you can convince the hiring manager that you can do the job, want the job and would fit in well with the company.

Your thesis statement should be short and to the point -- no more than one or two sentences. On your resume, it should be located at the top of your resume under the heading of "objective," "professional objective" or "career goals." The College News website says it should summarize your career goals, what you expect from a job and what you can offer a potential employer.

Tips for Writing Your Thesis Statement

1. Determine what kind of paper you are writing:

An analytical paper breaks down an issue or an idea into its component parts, evaluates the issue or idea, and presents this breakdown and evaluation to the audience.
An expository (explanatory) paper explains something to the audience.
An argumentative paper makes a claim about a topic and justifies this claim with specific evidence. The claim could be an opinion, a policy proposal, an evaluation, a cause-and-effect statement, or an interpretation. The goal of the argumentative paper is to convince the audience that the claim is true based on the evidence provided.

If you are writing a text that does not fall under these three categories (e.g., a narrative), a thesis statement somewhere in the first paragraph could still be helpful to your reader.

2. Your thesis statement should be specific—it should cover only what you will discuss in your paper and should be supported with specific evidence.

3. The thesis statement usually appears at the end of the first paragraph of a paper.

4. Your topic may change as you write, so you may need to revise your thesis statement to reflect exactly what you have discussed in the paper.
