5 routes to getting a Doctorate

While most of those studying for a PhD take the PhD by thesis pathway, there are five viable routes to achieving a Doctorate, with both full-time and part-time options available

PhD by thesis

This is the most common means of getting a Doctorate. Over the three or four years of research at university, your PhD supervisor will support you as you aim to produce a thesis based on your research proposal .

A thesis is typically 60,000-90,000 words in length - although this can vary between institutions. For instance, the University of Glasgow's College of Social Sciences expects a thesis to be 70,000 to 100,000 words including references, bibliography and appendices, while the University of Cambridge has set an upper limit of 80,000 words.

Once completed, you'll need to defend your PhD thesis in front of a panel of examiners during your viva voce .

Doctorate by publication

This route involves submitting previously published work - such as books, book chapters and journal articles, which together form a coherent body of work and show evidence of an original contribution to a particular field of study.

The PhD by publication route is often taken by mid-career academics that haven't had the opportunity to undertake a standard Doctorate degree.

Generally, a minimum of five to eight published pieces are required, but this varies between institutions and depends on their length. The published work will be assessed to the same rigorous standards as a traditional PhD by thesis.

You must also provide a written supporting statement, which typically ranges from 5,000 to 15,000 words.

For instance, the University of Westminster asks for a commentary of 5,000 words (science and technology subjects) or 10,000 words (arts, social sciences and humanities). On the other hand, Queen Margaret University Edinburgh requires 12,000 to 15,000 words on the rationale and theoretical context for the portfolio of published work.

The work will then be presented to an academic committee. A supervisor will assist you with selecting which publications to submit, as well as guidance on the supporting statement.

Some universities accept only their own graduates for a PhD by publication, while others restrict this route to their academic staff. In general, you should have graduated from your first degree at least seven years ago to be eligible.

For example, The University of Manchester has published its own Guidance for the PhD By Published Work , with eligibility only extending to current members of staff.

Professional Doctorate

This type of Doctorate includes a significant taught component and a smaller research project, and is geared primarily towards current professionals in vocational sectors such as:

  • engineering and manufacturing
  • teaching and education .

Professional Doctorates are often taken on a part-time basis and can last between two and eight years. Like their standard PhD counterparts, they usually begin in October or January.

While you won't typically be looking to get an academic job , your research is expected to contribute to theory as well as professional practice. Projects often revolve around a real-life issue that affects your employer.

Several professional Doctorates, such as the Doctorate in Clinical Psychology (DClinPsy), are accredited by a professional body - for instance, the Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC) and The British Psychological Society (BPS) - and may also lead to a professional qualification .

Common titles for graduates of professional Doctorate degrees include:

  • Doctor of Business Administration (DBA)
  • Doctor of Education (EdD)
  • Doctor of Engineering (EngD)
  • Doctor of Medicine (MD).

Unlike many professional Doctorates, the EngD is typically offered as a full-time course and is aimed at young engineering graduates with little or no professional experience.

Integrated PhD

This four-year qualification, also known as the New Route PhD, involves studying a one-year research Masters degree (MRes) before progressing onto a three-year PhD.

Offered by a select number of universities across the UK, integrated PhDs are supported by the government and the British Council through UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) .

Visit Research Council funding for further information on research and funding for different types of PhD.

The integrated PhD involves a combination of taught materials, practical experience and advanced research. This allows you to learn subject-specific methodologies, while building the transferable skills that will enable you to become a leader in your chosen profession.

Institutions can also develop personalised integrated PhD programmes to meet each student's needs. For example, universities may offer you the opportunity to gain a postgraduate certificate (PGCert) in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education - perfect if you're considering a career as a higher education lecturer .

Online/distance learning PhD

As PhDs are based primarily on independent research rather than time spent in lectures and seminars, distance learning has always been a viable route for many Doctoral students.

PhDs by distance learning offered by course providers such as The Open University are therefore a good option to consider if you've got family or work commitments or are an international student - as this gives you the chance to undertake Doctoral research without having to live close to your chosen institution. It's also a suitable mode of study if your subject requires you to be based in a specific location away from the university.

For the most part, you'll be in touch with your supervisor by phone, email or Skype/Zoom. You'll need to bear in mind that even if you opt for this form of research, you'll generally still need to attend university for one or two weeks of each academic year for meetings and to receive research skills training. Your final exam may be undertaken either face-to-face or virtually.

With online PhDs, you can usually register as a full or part-time student. The level of fees you pay varies between institutions - some charge the same as for a standard PhD while others offer a reduced rate.

Check that any funding you plan to apply for is available to distance learning students, as this isn't always the case.

PhD by Distance

""

Our PhD by Distance programme allows you to benefit from our world-class support and the expertise of a Reading-based supervisor, while conducting your research in a location that suits your circumstances.

The programme is available to candidates who need to study for most of their registration period at another site, whether in the UK, or worldwide. Acceptance for PhD by Distance is subject to the approval of the supervisors and the relevant school or department.

There are several reasons why you may wish to base yourself away from the University of Reading while undertaking your PhD:

  • You have an extensive fieldwork element to your research
  • You have responsibilities (e.g. caring or employment) that prevent you from attending on campus
  • You are already based and/or employed in an environment that is relevant and conducive to their research
  • You do not reside within travelling distance of the University
  • You are based in a UK research organisation/institution with a collaborative agreement with the University of Reading in place

What the programme offers

On the PhD by Distance programme, you will benefit from:

  • the opportunity to study on  either a part-time (4-6 years duration) or full-time basis (3-4 years duration)
  • supervision from one or more leading University of Reading academics, working at the forefront of their field
  • access to a range of high-quality training, delivered on campus or online (see section below on Training)
  • access to extensive online Library resources
  • a PhD qualification which is delivered and examined at the same high academic standard as a campus-based PhD and a standard PhD degree certificate which does not state the mode of study on it.

Training for PhD by Distance students

The doctoral and researcher college provides a suite of generic researcher training open to all doctoral researchers at reading; this complements subject-specific training available via schools. the specific content of the programme changes from year to year but broadly includes the following: .

  • Live online training (available off-campus) – A selection of our training sessions in the Reading Researcher Development Programme (RRDP) are delivered live online each year. UK time zone applies
  • Recorded tutorials (available off-campus) – A small but growing selection of recorded tutorials on key topics such as managing data, academic English and research funding
  • Face-to-face training (available on campus only) - Other RRDP training sessions and selected longer programmes are offered face-to-face only. Students registered By Distance have access to face-to-face training when physically present on campus.

By Distance study entails reduced access to training opportunities and on-campus experience. By Distance candidates are encouraged to discuss and mutually agree overall training plans with their supervisor and seek supplementary training external to Reading (e.g. via an employer or nearby institution) as appropriate.

Induction and physical attendance

A University-wide induction event is held by the Doctoral and Researcher College near the start of each term for all new doctoral researchers. PhD by Distance students studying at Reading in the first term are expected to attend. Where it is not possible for PhD by Distance students to attend in person (i.e. they are not on campus), a recording of the induction will be made available on the virtual learning environment.

Students registered By Distance will benefit from being physically present on campus for periods of time, for instance to attend induction and selected training, to meet their supervisor and peers, and to attend at key points such as Confirmation of Registration. It is strongly recommended that the first month of their programme be spent on campus.

Eligibility

You must meet the following criteria:

  • Satisfy the academic and English language entry requirements for PhD study
  • The candidate has a research project which can be undertaken successfully by distance; regular access to campus should not be essential for successful completion of the research
  • The candidate must be able to demonstrate that they have the time to undertake a PhD on the selected mode (full-time or part-time). Part-time doctoral study at Reading typically equates to between 50% and 60% of full-time
  • The candidate has independent access to the resources needed to successfully complete their research; this will vary between candidates and projects but may include access to archives, facilities, data collection, digital infrastructure or space in their off-campus location
  • The candidate is well motivated to work alone; they understand that By Distance registration is not an online learning programme and has reduced access to campus training
  • The candidate and School/Department have discussed the suitability of their research project and personal circumstances for study by distance
  • The candidate, where appropriate, has access to support from a local supervisor or mentor with experience in the academic field and also of supporting students or equivalent researchers. Advisors/mentors may be appointed to provide a regular point of contact, and are normally in a position to act as an ‘advocate’ and provide pastoral care if needed.
  • Will study at least two-thirds of your minimum registration period off campus

If you are intending to study in the Henley Business School, then please check with the  relevant Department within the Business School  about whether PhD by Distance is available before you apply.

A PhD by Distance is not suitable for all candidates. In offering a PhD By Distance programme specific consideration is given to the suitability of the research project, and whether it can be completed successfully without regular access to campus. Further consideration is given to areas of supervision, support, transferable and subject-specific skills training, research environment , progression milestones and the examination process in order to ensure off campus research students receive a comparable (although, not similar) experience to on campus students registered on ‘standard’ PhD programmes.

Fees for PhD by Distance programmes can be found on the fees webpage

  • How to apply

Before starting your application, you are strongly advised to  navigate to the PhD webpages of your chosen school or department  to read the specific guidance on how to apply, as the requirements can vary. Once you have read the guidance, you will need to make a formal application through the University's  online application system , highlighting that you wish to study for a PhD by Distance (full or part-time). If you have questions about PhD by Distance in a specific school or department, then please contact the relevant School/Department PGR Administrator in the  School PGR Support Team .

Immigration considerations for international students

PhD by Distance students must ensure that when visiting the University that they obtain the correct visa. The correct type of visa depends upon the period of time which a student intends to spend physically at the University.

PhD by Distance students can visit the University for up to six months within each academic year with a maximum of eighteen months in total for the duration of their programme. Students must discuss their intentions with the Doctoral Research Office (DRO) well in advance of any planned visit to the University. The DRO is well-placed to provide information on a range of immigration-related matters related to Postgraduate Research Programmes [email protected]

Examination

The normal expectation is that the viva of a PhD by Distance student will take place in Reading. Where this is not feasible, online examinations will be arranged.

Distance learning PhD Programmes in United Kingdom

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, commonly known as the United Kingdom and Britain, is a sovereign state located off the north-western coast of continental Europe. The two most famous (and oldest) universities are Oxford and Cambridge (often referred to as Oxbridge by many Britons) England also has several other world-class institutions, including several in London (notably Imperial College, the London School of Economics, University College London and King's College London, all are part of London University)

The PhD is a doctoral degree, specifically called a "doctor of philosophy" degree. This is misleading because PhD holders are not necessarily philosophers (unless they earned their degree in philosophy!). That said, PhD recipients are able to engage in thought experiments, reason about problems, and solve problems in sophisticated ways.

Online or distance learning refers to the use of electronic media and information and communication technologies (ICT) in education. With online learning, one can access education at any time and from any location with an available internet connection.

PhD by distance learning

The faculties of Environment and Arts, Humanities and Cultures offer PhD by distance learning across most schools.

PhD by distance learning allows you to study at a time and place that suits you and, with a part-time option available, you'll have the flexibility to gain an advanced degree alongside work and other commitments.

Through completing a PhD, you will become an expert in a specialist area and gain high-quality research training.

PhD Study in the UK

What is a phd.

A PhD is a research degree and is the highest award available at universities in the UK. The study is based on a substantial research project on an area of academic interest, typically up to 100,000 words in length, written as a thesis, which then must be defended in an oral examination in front of a panel of experts. Students are assigned a supervisor, and a PhD duration is typically three years full-time and six years part-time.

Very few research degrees feature taught modules, so students are expected to take more responsibility for their work and schedule.

PhD Eligibility

UK universities are free to admit anyone, with PhD admission generally conditional on the prospective student having completed an undergraduate degree with at least upper second-class honours and a master's degree . English language ability must be proved; a minimum IELTS score of 7.0 is generally required.

PhD Research Proposal

All students who apply for a PhD must submit a research proposal ( example ). The proposal should address the research you wish to undertake, how you will do it, and why it is important. A panel of experts must accept the proposal before your programme can begin.

Other types of Research Degree

Mphil (master of philosophy).

If you wish to study for a PhD, you may first need to begin an MPhil and then transfer to a PhD programme after 12-18 months. An MPhil is also a qualification in its own right and is generally thesis-only, lasting one year full-time and two years part-time. The thesis must present the results of a study and research and be a maximum of 60,000 words.

Students choose to study an MPhil if the proposed research has insufficient scope for a full PhD.

MRes (Master of Research)

An MRes is an advanced postgraduate research degree in the areas of art, humanities, and social sciences. Some Ph.D. Programs require an MRes qualification before beginning a PhD. The programme proper, and the student is required to complete a 40,000-word dissertation.

An MRes is a good way to see if you enjoy conducting research without fully committing to and funding a full PhD.

Professional Doctorate

Professional doctorates are similar to PhDs but are intended to advance professional practice rather than improve academic ability. Joint professional doctorates include law, education, business, engineering, and medicine.

How long does a PhD last?

A PhD in the UK usually takes three to four years if you study full-time. However, it can vary depending on the subject and how quickly you make progress. If you study part-time, it may take longer, typically five to seven years.

How much does a PhD cost?

Funding and researching a PhD can be expensive, with EU students paying up to £6,000 per year, and international students more.

It is rare for a PhD student to not be supported by some form of bursary, grant or scholarship  though, and many universities and research councils provide monetary support for part or all of a PhD programme.

PhD admission - how do I apply?

Once you have decided on an area of research and have looked into how you will fund your study, you will need to fill out several documents required when submitting your application. They can include:

  • Academic transcripts
  • Academic references
  • Personal statement
  • Research proposal ( example )

Students will also need to identify a supervisor who will oversee their PhD.

There are many different reasons for wanting to pursue a PhD – to move into an academic role at a university, to continue studying a subject you are passionate about or to further your career.

Whatever your motivation, many students are now choosing to pursue a PhD abroad. This guide will help you understand how to apply for a PhD at a UK university and answer any questions you might have around doing PhDs.

How to apply for a phd.

Application rules and methods vary for each university. The number of courses that you can apply for in a year will vary. For example, at the University of Sussex , you can apply for up to three postgraduate courses per year using the postgraduate application system.

If you are applying for more than one degree, you must submit a research proposal/statement specific to each area of study you apply for.

You can also apply to different universities to improve your chances of being accepted to a PhD course of your choosing.

What qualifications do I need?

Each PhD will have specific entry requirements and you will also need to meet a university’s general entry requirements.  This may be an upper second-class undergraduate honours degree (2:1) or an equivalent international qualification. For some PhDs you may need a master’s qualification, and you may be asked to attend an interview.

International students may also be required to prove language proficiency. This will vary across institutions so do check what level universities expect before starting your application.

Applicants should always check the specific entry requirements in a university’s online prospectus before making an application.

When should I start applying?

This will depend on when your term start date is. Most research degrees will start in September but some courses offer additional entry points in January or May.

You can apply all year round for research degrees starting in September, January and May, and the deadlines for applying are usually one month before the course start date for UK applicants, and three months before for international applicants.

If you’re applying for funding from an external organisation you’ll need to be aware that they may have different deadlines for the funding application. So give yourself plenty of time to research your funding options, and ensure you know how long the application process takes.

Many universities offer a number of funded PhD opportunities and PhD scholarships for UK and international students, and it’s always worth investigating funding routes such as research councils and other organisations, both in the UK and overseas.

In some cases, it may be possible to study a PhD by distance which means you’ll be able to learn online and have virtual meetings with your supervisor.

If this is something you would be interested in doing you should check before applying whether your university can accommodate this option.

Nine things to know before doing a PhD Starting a PhD during the pandemic Studying for a part-time PhD: the challenges and the benefits Is it possible to do a three-year PhD as an international student?

How should I look for a supervisor?

Usually if you are applying for a funded project, or to a research centre or group, you will normally be asked to provide a statement explaining your suitability for working in that area, and if successful you will be allocated a supervisor.

If you wish to propose your own area of research, you need to decide on a research topic, and you will be expected to write a research proposal. In some cases you may only be required to provide a summary of academic interests and this can be used to match you to a researcher that suits you.

If you are proposing your own research topic, there may be a research database at your university that you can search, or your university will match you with a supervisor during the assessment of your application. It may be possible to request supervision by a particular member of faculty – this will be considered but not all requests can be accommodated.

If you do find a potential supervisor who matches your research area, check their online profile for indications of their doctoral supervision capacity. If they are open to doctoral applications, you can contact them directly to check their availability for supervising you.

It is a good idea to draw up a shortlist of two to three potential supervisors, and take an in-depth look into their research history. You can also find out more about your potential supervisors by looking in the reference sections of academic textbooks and searching for articles in research databases and academic blogs.

When you contact your potential supervisor, it is important to tell them something interesting about yourself, and explain your research interests and how you feel your research proposal matches their expertise.

How do I write a research proposal?

If you are proposing your own research you will need to write a strong proposal that formulates a precise, interesting research question, and establishes the relevance and value of the proposed research question in the context of current academic thinking.

You’ll need to make sure your proposal describes the data or source material your research requires, and outlines a clear and practical methodology that enables you to answer the research question and that states clearly what you hope to discover at the end of your research, and what new areas it might open up.

The precise content and structure of your research proposal will depend on your subject area, and the University of Sussex has some helpful resources on our website to guide you through the process.

How long does the application process take?

Completing an application and writing a research proposal may take some time and should not be left until just before the application deadline.

It’s not easy to give a definite idea of how long it takes to hear if your application has been successful, as it will depend on when the application is made and the nature of the specific PhD, and you would need to meet any conditions contained within the offer before you can start the PhD.

What are the associated costs?

There won’t typically be an application fee for PhDs but there are tuition fees. If a university does charge application fees they will usually be between £50-£100.

The tuition fees for students studying in the UK are set by UK Research and Innovation . Fees for international students are £18,975 for non-lab-based subjects, and £22,975 for lab-based subjects per year.

You’ll also need to factor in living costs, but there are a number of funding routes you can apply for to help with this. As well as PhD scholarships and funded research projects there are research council awards, PhD loans for those eligible, and various organisations to which international students can apply for funding, such as The Gen Foundation and Open Society Foundations.

It’s important to be aware of the costs involved, but it’s also worth remembering that the educational, career and personal benefits of PhD study can be worth it.

Routes to a PhD

There are three ways to apply for doctoral research.

Kroto Research Institute student

1. Develop your own idea and find a supervisor

Find out who's doing the kind of research you're interested in and familiarise yourself with their work.

Find a research supervisor

Department websites also provide research supervisor details.

2. Apply to work with a supervisor on one of their projects

Departments advertise PhD projects throughout the year. Many projects are funded. You might find that a research project comes with a supervisor attached. Even so, it's worth finding out as much as you can about your supervisor before you apply.

PhD project directory

3. Apply to a Centre for Doctoral Training

Centres for Doctoral Training (CDTs) are a radical alternative to the usual PhD. They're designed to produce skilled individuals who can tackle the major challenges of our time. The programmes take three to four years to complete and combine taught modules with original research. They lead to a full PhD or Engineering Doctorate (EngD).

You can apply direct to a CDT or in some cases to the University, which includes writing a proposal.

Find a training centre

Department websites also advertise the latest CDT opportunities.

What is a PhD?

A PhD is the highest academic degree that can be achieved through study, involving up to four years full-time (or up to eight years part-time) working towards a presentation of original research in the form of a thesis that offers a significant, original contribution to knowledge.

You'll manage your project with the support of an expert supervisory team, and undertake a tailored doctoral training programme to develop the advanced skills and expertise you will need.

Outside of the core PhD programme you will be encouraged to take advantage of broader opportunities such as teaching, publishing, communicating your research, developing professional networks, and interacting with industry partners or external organisations.

You'll be a key part of the academic community in your department and beyond, and be prepared for a wide range of career options both within and outside of academia.

PhDs with Integrated Studies

Some of our departments offer PhDs with Integrated Studies. You spend an initial year taking taught modules and a short research project, so you learn the research skills you'll need before progressing to a PhD.

Check department websites for the latest course details.

Scholarships and funding

Ideally, you should start planning and investigating funding opportunities at least a year before you want to start your studies. There are lots of different types of scholarships available, from partial fee scholarships to full awards covering fees and maintenance. There are also other sources of external funding.

When you study an undergraduate degree, the only difference in the fee you pay comes down to which nation you’re from. The subject you study makes no difference. If you’re from England and study Medicine, you’ll pay £9,250 per year. If you are from England and study English Literature, you also pay £9,250 per year.

The same does not apply to postgraduate tuition.

Clinical courses like Medicine, Dentistry and Vet Science cost far more to run than other subjects. They may need more contact time with lecturers, increasing staffing costs. Students also expect to learn using the latest simulation facilities.

Similarly, ‘lab’ courses like engineering and science must pay for precision equipment and skilled technicians to support students’ learning.

Least expensive are the ‘classroom’ courses. These are subjects like History or English – humanities, languages and social sciences. Students studying these subjects may only get lectures, meaning fewer staff may be required – saving the uni money.

So, at postgraduate level, tuition fees can more accurately reflect the cost of the subject. If you want to find affordable tuition fees, courses like English or Creative Writing MAs are often the cheapest. MScs in science and engineering generally cost more.

But courses aren’t always priced according to their cost. MBA courses often charge higher tuition fees than business degrees run as an MA or MSc, due to their popularity.

In the end, it’s up to the university how they price their courses. In our research we came across some institutions where all the courses we checked had the same tuition fee. This could be in the hope of attracting more applications to balance out the cost of expensive subjects. At these institutions, you really can study an MSc in Biological Science for the price of an MA in English Literature.

Why do postgraduate fees keep rising?

In recent years, university costs have risen. Unis must invest in the latest technology and provide support to ensure students get the best outcomes. Postgraduate students also want the benefit of the latest research, and your tuition fees may help to subsidise research at your university.

At the same time, some of the main income sources for universities have not risen in line with costs. This includes:

  • UK undergraduate tuition fees being capped
  • UK government funding cuts for undergraduate tuition
  • UK research funding being squeezed

Publicly funded unis aren’t allowed to increase their tuition fees for undergraduates. However, they can set their own tuition fees for postgraduate study.

And while tuition fees for international students have always cost more, UK postgrad fees have increased at a higher rate. We ran a survey of UK university tuition fees for 15 years until 2021. In that time, UK postgraduate fees rose by 129% when compared with the average fee in 2006. International student fees grew by an average of 87% over the same period.

Top tips to find affordable postgraduate tuition

The following tips can help you to find the unis with the most affordable master’s:

  • Rankings – top ranking unis can charge a premium, knowing that students are willing to pay what they charge because of their reputation. Look further down our league tables and you’re likely to find institutions offering lower tuition fees. Even universities with a good reputation don’t excel in every subject they offer, so it’s always worth shopping around. Check our subject tables to see how they compare.
  • London factor – the capital isn’t the place to find inexpensive tuition as running costs are higher. However, some London unis will have lower fees than unis elsewhere.
  • Specialists – small and specialist institutions have only a small pool of students to help cover their costs. They may not be able to offer discounted tuition fees.
  • Online courses – if you don’t have to study your subject in person, see if you can find a course online. Online tuition is nearly always cheaper.
  • Scholarships – don’t forget to check whether funding is available. Our university profiles have a section on student support, where unis can list their postgraduate scholarships. Alumni often get a discount, but you may need to progress straight into postgraduate study to benefit.

Below is our list of the top ten most affordable unis for postgraduate study in 2024. These are for UK students studying a full-time, one-year taught master’s degree at one of our league table universities. If you’re not sure whether you’ll be charged home/UK fees, check our guide on student finance eligibility.

=10. Liverpool Hope University

Lowest fee: £7,500.

Tying in tenth place for the most inexpensive master’s fee are four universities.

Liverpool Hope has often been in our top ten unis for the best UK postgraduate fees. This year the uni’s fees range from £7,500–£13,000, with the lowest prices for MAs. Whether you choose Creative Music Practice or Disability Studies, the uni’s master’s degrees are underpinned by the expertise and research of academic staff.

=10. University of Sunderland

At Sunderland, humanities and social sciences have the most affordable master’s fees at £7,500. We found this price for MAs in Childhood and Youth Studies, Education, Journalism, and Law LLM, among others. Employers are involved in course design and lecturers have close links to their sector. You’ll gain workplace skills and knowledge to help you towards your future career and make your investment in master’s study worthwhile.

=10. University of the West of Scotland

Four unis from Scotland make our top ten – but then the Scots have a reputation for being good (or careful) with money. Unfortunately for students from the rest of the UK (RUK), the cheapest fees at this uni are only available to students from Scotland. Scottish students could study a Big Data MSc or Creative Media Practice MA for £7,500 – those from RUK will need to pay more.

=10. University of Wales Trinity Saint David

£7,500 is what you’ll pay to study a sports or exercise MA at UWTSD. Other master’s degrees at this uni cost slightly more, at £7,800. However, £7,800 is also the price for their MBA, making UWTSD the cheapest place in the UK to study a one-year MBA on campus. Locations include London and Birmingham as well as Swansea and other campuses across south Wales.

=8. Glasgow Caledonian University

Lowest fee: £7,300.

Unlike some other Scottish unis, Glasgow Caledonian doesn’t differentiate between Scotland and the rest of the UK, charging all UK students the same postgraduate rate. Fees do vary between subjects, but it’s not a simple distinction between MA and MSc. We found an MSc Medical Bioscience at £7,300 and an MA in Multimedia Journalism at the higher rate of £8,900. Courses have a real-world, practical focus, and may include professional accreditation.

=8. Queen's University Belfast

It’s always worth checking the prices at higher ranking institutions. Queen’s ranks 25 th in our 2025 league table, so it came as a surprise to find this Russell Group uni offering fees as low as £7,300 for a master’s degree. The catch is that you must be a resident of Northern Ireland or the Republic of Ireland to get this price. Still, fees for other UK students are also reasonable, at £9,250. And you’ll get to enjoy the craic of a good night out in Belfast during your studies! A number of MAs are available at this price, including the MA Arts Management.

7. Edinburgh Napier University

Lowest fee: £7,280.

Master’s fees at Edinburgh Napier are the same for all UK students but vary by subject. At the lowest rate of £7,280 there’s plenty to choose from, including an MSc in Advanced Security and Digital Forensics and an MA in Writing Popular Fiction. The uni’s interdisciplinary approach to teaching means you can learn from other relevant specialisms alongside your own.

6. Ulster University

Lowest fee: £7,000.

Northern Ireland is clearly a good place to check for affordable master’s fees. In the case of Ulster University, the same fees apply to students from Great Britain as well as those from Northern Ireland. You’ll find many master’s degrees at this price – from English Literature MA to Artificial Intelligence MSc. Some of Ulster’s MScs charge more, but with fees of £7,350 for many of these, they’re still lower than some other unis in our top ten.

5. Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh

Lowest fee: £6,825.

At Queen Margaret, the cheapest fees are reserved for arts and media courses. Most of QMU's courses focus on practical work experience, and many offer the option of a hands-on project rather than a dissertation. For instance, the MA in Arts, Festival and Cultural Management makes the most of the uni’s proximity to Edinburgh. Students on this course can benefit from internships offered by the likes of the Edinburgh International Festival and the Lyceum Theatre, among others.

4. University of Cumbria

Lowest fee: £6,720.

The University of Cumbria may not offer the widest range of subjects, but fees for most full-time master’s degrees are inexpensive. Some courses capitalise on the uni’s idyllic location in the heart of England’s Lake District. These include the MA in Outdoor and Experiential Learning and the MA in Literature, Romanticism and the English Lake District, both offered at the uni’s Ambleside campus.

As well as reasonable fees, students at Teesside also benefit from a new postgraduate facility, with spaces for individual and collaborative study. Alumni get 20% more off fees, making your master’s qualification all the more affordable. £6,710 is what you’ll pay for a ‘standard’ full-time taught MA or MSc – this includes the International Management MSc. ‘Enhanced’ master’s cost more, but at only £7,365 they come well within the range of our top ten fees.

How to Find a PhD in the UK

  • Introduction

1. Identify your research interests

2. look for relevant phd projects, 3. contact supervisors and write proposals, 4. apply for phd funding, 5. choose the best phd for you.

After receiving the QS Academic Scholarship (worth US$10,000) in 2012, Indian student Rajesh Kumar headed to the UK’s University of Glasgow to complete an MRes in Biomedical Science. Having thoroughly enjoyed both the course and the wider research environment offered by the UK, he was keen to stay on and find a PhD program.

He’s spent the past six months immersed in researching PhD projects , writing proposals, applying for PhD funding and seeking advice, and has been successful in receiving offers of places at a number of the UK’s leading universities.

Now all set to start a fully funded PhD program at the University of Sheffield , as part of a research collaboration with the University of Oxford, Rajesh shares his advice on how to find a PhD, how to secure PhD funding, and how to choose when faced with a confusing selection of options.

The first important step, Rajesh says, is to gain a clear understanding of your own research interests – which in his case are in the field of stem cell biology and regenerative science. Studying an MRes certainly helped him get a better idea of the “driving questions” he wanted to help answer, as well as giving him a “flavor” of what to expect from a PhD. The MRes, or Masters by Research, is a kind of “squeezed PhD”, as Rajesh puts it, often specifically designed to prepare students for PhD-level research.

Once you’ve identified your research interests, you can start searching for relevant PhD projects, Rajesh says. He suggests using websites which advertise PhD studentships such as Nature.com and FindaPhD.com , as well as consulting the department websites of universities you’re especially interested in. Here, he says his MRes supervisor and lab-mates were helpful sources of information and inspiration, suggesting different approaches to finding out about relevant PhD projects and supervisors.

Having identified a list of relevant PhD projects with openings, Rajesh then began contacting supervisors and departments to find out if he might be suitable for each position. He also sent out research proposals of his own, which he says received a very positive response – so far resulting in offers of PhD positions at the Universities of Oxford , Cardiff , Glasgow and Sheffield , as well as invitations to take on research assistantships at Leicester and Cambridge .

Even after being offered places at such an impressive array of leading UK universities, however, Rajesh faced a new challenge. Most of the PhD projects he’d been invited to join were not fully funded, so he needed to do his own research to find some external PhD funding. “I started researching the different funding organizations in the UK and Europe, writing to them to explain my offers from different universities,” he says. Unfortunately, most of the deadlines for PhD funding had already passed; those seeking PhDs are advised to start the process as early as possible to allow adequate time for this stage.

In addition to the major PhD funding bodies in the UK and at European level , Rajesh also notes that individual universities also often have dedicated funding available for specific PhD projects. “I’m still learning – there are a lot of different ways to find PhD funding!” The ideal situation, he says, is to find a PhD which is fully funded from the start – and this is what he’s succeeded in doing, at the University of Sheffield.

For Rajesh, the choice was ultimately made easier by the fact that only one of his current options offered full PhD funding – and he was reluctant to wait an extra year in order to pursue additional PhD funding avenues. However, there was a period when he felt a little overwhelmed by all the different options being presented to him, and here he says it helped to consult information such as that provided by the QS World University Rankings by Subject , to get a better idea of the research strengths of each institution. He promises that this is not just because he received a QS Scholarship!

Doctorate Degree vs PhD

  • Ph.D. programs focus more on the theoretical and abstract aspects of their respective fields of study to understand it as a school of thought rather than just a practical application.
  • Usual doctorate programs tend to be more practical in their study and focus on the application of knowledge rather than understanding more abstract perspectives.
  • Ph.D. degrees are often offered in the same fields that have standard doctoral degrees available usually offered in fields such as engineering, mathematics, natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities.
  • Doctorate programs are made up of advanced coursework, research projects, or thesis work almost strictly for practical application.
  • Ph.D. and Doctorate degrees can often achieve the same ends and should be considered more or less equal in weight.

Guide to Online Doctorate Degrees

Fewer positions requiring this advanced level qualification and reduced competition for such job opportunities among job seekers are some of the reasons behind the few doctoral graduates.

With technological advancements in almost all areas of life, acquiring education, a significantly advanced level of education has become more accessible. Graduate students now do not have to attend physical classes to pursue their dreams of developing and advancing their skills.

You can pursue your doctorate in the comfort of your home or even your office.

There was a 20% growth in students granted doctorate degrees between the 2009/2010 and 2019/2020 academic years, according to NCES. This growth has been attributed in part to online Ph.D. programs and the streamlining of modern universities.

Online Ph.D. programs are a relatively newer idea and online schooling in general has greatly increased access, flexibility, and convenience.

Students typically complete these degrees soon after completing a Master's degree in the same area. As such, and with bachelor's degrees being necessary stepping stones, students can expect their journey from primary school to a Ph.D. to take about nine years, barring any accelerated tracks and failed classes.

Cost of an Online Doctoral Degree Program

When choosing any doctoral degree program, it is crucial to evaluate the costs and salary after attending. Even though online Ph.D. courses may usually be cheaper than on-campus learning, secondary schooling is rarely cheap and not every field will allow you to make back the cost in a reasonable amount of time.

Tuition, materials, technology, transportation, housing, and groceries should all be factors brought into account when deciding whether or where to attend, and in what field you can find the most success and fulfillment.

Below are the annual tuition rates of different institutions as reported by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES).

Institution Type Annual Tuition
Private-For profit institutions $18,200
Private-Not for-profit institutions $37,600
Public institutions $9,400

Choosing an Online Doctoral Degree Program

Take some time to consider the marketability, cost, and difficulty of each program and your own interest in the subject. To reach your career and educational goals, do your best research.

A doctorate in business administration can prepare you for leadership roles and skillful operation within global markets.

With this degree, you can pursue leadership positions in a variety of fields, including for-profit companies, non-profit organizations, and government groups. You can also work in education, whether in an administrative role or as a professor.

In preparation for such positions, your coursework will cover topics like quantitative and qualitative research methods, statistics, economics, management theories, and organizational behavior.

As a more exclusive degree than an MBA, a DBA can set you apart and help you land top leadership positions. Plus, the number of courses required is typically less, making it one of the shortest doctoral options.

A doctoral degree in counseling or therapy can equip you to help others work through their mental health or interpersonal struggles, and it can prepare you for leadership roles in counseling organizations.

With this degree, you can pursue careers in social work, private practice, or program administration. You may also tailor your education with concentrations like Counselor Education and Supervision, Art Therapy, Marriage and Family Therapy, and Addiction Counseling.

A PhD in Education and an EdD are quite similar degrees. Both programs focus on education and can prepare you for leadership roles. PhD programs, however, are more research-based.

A PhD can be a better match for someone looking for a career in research, publishing, or teaching at the university level. It focuses less on application than an Ed.D., but the same types of careers are possible with either of these two degrees.

In terms of time to completion, the shortest program option is usually the EdD because there’s often no dissertation required.

You can also choose to prepare for leadership roles in this field by pursuing a DBA with a concentration in Finance.

Doctorate in Healthcare Administration

Earning a doctoral degree in the field of healthcare administration can prepare you for leadership positions in healthcare and medical settings. With it, you can work in hospitals, nursing homes, medical records companies, political think tanks, government agencies, or universities.

In this discipline, you’ll take classes on global health, business, law and policies, finance, and organizational leadership. Many DHA programs offer concentrations like Public Health, Leadership, and Health Policy.

An alternative academic path is earning a DBA with a concentration in Healthcare Administration, which can offer a shorter route to a doctorate when no dissertation is required.

Doctorate in Human Services

Earning a doctorate in human services can prepare you for leadership positions in organizations that provide services and assistance for various groups of people. You may work in schools, clinics, community outreach programs, or non-profit organizations.

You can take your religious education to the next level with a doctorate in ministry or theology. After earning this degree, you can choose to put your education into practice in church, parachurch, counseling, or chaplaincy positions.

Coursework for this degree typically helps students grow not only academically, but also spiritually. Topics covered include leadership, spiritual disciplines, evangelism, social justice, and teaching methods.

Some doctoral candidates pursue a specialization. Options include Counseling, Worship, Chaplaincy, Spiritual Disciplines, and Urban Ministry.

A career as a professor is a possibility with this degree, or you could become a missionary leader or lead pastor at a church.

Many universities require students to hold professional ministry positions before admitting them into their programs.

Doctorate in Nursing (Doctor of Nursing Practice)

The top-educated nurses have their doctoral degrees in nursing practice. With this degree, you can continue offering direct patient care. For example, you might work as a specialty nurse in a clinic. You could also use your degree as a care coordinator, manager of a nursing team, policymaker, or nurse educator.

For RNs (Registered Nurses) who want to teach and train other nurses in academic settings, a PhD in Nursing is the best doctorate-level nursing degree to pursue. A PhD in Nursing can also prepare you for a career in research as a nursing scientist.

Coursework for this degree includes classes on information technology, finance, organizational leadership, safety, and healthcare law. Keep in mind that a doctoral degree in nursing is a terminal degree in the field and will not qualify you for a position as a physician.

DNP programs have gained a lot of popularity over the years and are designed for RNs who seek advancement while remaining practicing nurses.

Earning a DNP can prepare you for leadership careers in the nursing industry. It will teach you how to advocate for and make policies, manage and direct nursing programs, and ensure communities offer the best healthcare to citizens who need it the most.

Doctorate in Public Administration

Whether you want to work in a government agency or would prefer a position with a related organization, a doctorate in public administration can help you achieve your goals.

People with this doctoral degree often serve as politicians, lobbyists, non-profit directors, grant writers, administrators, or government affairs directors. If you want to go into government or politics, you could work at the local, state, or national level.

In this field, you’ll study human resources, public policy, budgeting, ethics, organizational leadership, and decision-making.

PhD in Public Health

With a doctoral degree in public health, you could choose to conduct research in the fields of epidemiology, environmental science, clinical trials, or academia.

Instead, you could choose to pursue leadership roles in public health as a safety engineer, a clinic manager, or an executive of a hospital system.

Classes for this degree cover health equity, data analysis, biostatistics, and healthcare policy. Concentrations are available at many universities. Common options include Health Education, Leadership, and Laboratory Science.

PhD in Public Policy

If you want to have a hand in creating or modifying the policies that shape people’s lives and communities, then a doctoral program in public policy can provide the education that you need. Graduates often work for government agencies, universities, think tanks, and various institutions.

You may focus on Urban Policy, Health Policy, Financial Management, or other areas of specialization.

Ph.D. in Psychology

A doctoral degree in psychology can help you understand how people think and the influence that thought has on behavior. Many people pursue this degree because they want to work as licensed clinical psychologists in schools, private practices, hospitals, or organizational settings.

Coursework for this degree covers counseling theories, psychopathology, culture, motivation and behavior, and cognition.

Programs leading to licensure typically require a lengthy supervised practicum.

What is the Difference Between a PhD and a Doctorate?

A PhD, or Doctor of Philosophy, is just one type of doctorate, of which there are many.

Common doctorate degrees include:

  • Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.)
  • Doctor of Business Administration (DBA)
  • Doctor of Education (EdD)
  • Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)
  • Doctor of Social Work (DSW)

Although the PhD is just one type of doctorate, it does have one distinguishing feature: the dissertation requirement. Nearly every PhD program requires adding to your field’s body of knowledge by performing original research on an approved topic of interest.

So, if you’re looking for fast-track doctoral programs, professional doctorates are generally a better choice.

How Long Does It Take to Get a Doctorate?

The length of time it takes to complete your doctorate will depend on the university and the type of doctoral program you attend.

On average, it takes 3 to 5 years to earn a doctorate.

The answers to the following questions can significantly impact completion time:

  • Does the doctorate require a dissertation?
  • How many classes can you take at one time?
  • Are you transferring any credits into the program?
  • How many weeks long are your classes?
  • Is there a residency requirement?
  • Is there a professional internship requirement?

As you can see, the best answer we can give you is: it depends.

To give you a ballpark, if you are working toward a professional doctorate (DBA, EdD, PsyD, etc.) and there is no dissertation requirement, you should be able to complete your program in about 2 to 3 years. Some people may be able to complete it in less time, and some may take longer. This is simply an average.

The dissertation requirement of Ph.D. programs can significantly impact your completion time. Generally speaking, it takes most doctoral students 3 to 5 years to complete a Ph.D.

What’s the Quickest Way to Earn a Doctorate Degree?

Just like accelerated online master’s programs , the shortest path to a doctorate will vary depending on your background, the program selected, and the university’s requirements.

The time it takes to complete a doctoral program online varies widely by university. For some universities, 3-year PhD programs are the norm. The official timeline on most university websites is about 3 – 5 years to complete a doctoral degree, but that’s just a general guideline.

If you are looking for the shortest PhD programs, you’ll want to select a program that does not require a dissertation. Dissertations are notorious for taking 2+ years to complete beyond the actual course requirements.

The following doctoral programs do not always require a dissertation: EdD, PsyD, DBA, DPA, and similar professional degrees. Most PhD programs require a dissertation (which means they’ll take longer to complete).

Another way to speed up your degree is by enrolling at a university that offers accelerated (8-week) doctoral courses. Since the courses take half the time to complete, you can finish your studies in less time.

Finally, you’ll want to pick a program that requires fewer credit hours. For example, one university may require 64 credit hours for an EdD while another may only require 42 credits. When looking for the shortest doctorate programs, you’ll want to examine the credit hour requirements closely.

This is also a great way to find the cheapest online doctoral programs. Generally, you’ll pay less tuition if you don’t need as many credit hours for program completion.

Are There Any One-Year Online Doctoral Programs?

When exploring the fastest route to a doctorate, it’s important to understand the available options and their typical timelines.

While some fast track schools offer the possibility of finishing a professional doctorate in 12 to 18 months, most accredited universities generally promote their doctorate programs as taking 3 or more years to complete.

These are some things to consider when looking for a faster doctoral program:

  • Standard PhD duration : The usual time frame for completing a PhD is about 3 to 5 years. Occasionally, you might come across a 2-year PhD program, but these programs are quite rare.
  • Other career-focused doctorates
  • Select an online program with fewer credit hours required.
  • Enroll in accelerated online courses , often structured as 8-week classes.
  • Consider no-dissertation programs
  • Look for programs that don’t require a GRE for admission.
  • Capstone project as an alternative : Consider programs requiring a capstone project instead of a traditional dissertation. Capstone projects require research but generally take less time to complete than dissertations.

So, while 1-year online doctorate programs are not commonly available, especially from accredited institutions, these strategies can help you find a doctorate program that can be completed in a significantly shorter time.

Do All PhD Programs Require Students to Complete a Dissertation?

PhD programs usually require dissertations, but professional doctorates, such as a Doctor of Business Administration or Doctor of Education, generally do not require dissertations. Instead, they typically require capstone projects.

What Is the Fastest PhD Program Available?

The fastest PhDs available will be those that require 30 credit hours or less to complete. Once you’ve selected the fastest online degree that requires fewer credit hours than the norm, try to narrow your list further by selecting a university with accelerated PhD classes, which generally only take 8 weeks to complete.

If a PhD is not absolutely necessary, you will likely find it easier to find a professional doctorate program that meets these criteria, and it will likely not require a dissertation.

Having to fulfill a dissertation requirement can significantly increase the time it takes to complete your degree.

If speed is the most important factor, then a professional or applied doctorate, such as an online Doctor of Business Administration, Doctor of Psychology, or Doctorate of Education, will likely be the fastest option.

Looking for the Fastest Doctorate Programs?

When looking for the fastest doctorate degrees available, the first thing to consider is how much you’re willing to compromise in the name of speed.

Yes, there are accredited online doctoral programs that can be completed in less time than traditional, campus-based programs. The key is finding the shortest doctoral program offering the exact studies you seek.

In your search for efficiency, focusing on programs with short completion times and fewer course requirements can be a strategic choice.

Choosing a fast-track online doctorate program with minimal required courses, accelerated online classes, and no dissertation requirements can be a smart move toward efficiently achieving your academic goals. We invite you to start exploring accredited programs today with our program finder below.

What is an accelerated degree program?

The fastest online doctoral degree programs are ideal for working professionals who need the accolade, but may not have the time to put into a traditional on-campus degree program.

Many courses within online doctoral programs can be completed within two years. Of course, not every Ph.D. or doctoral degree topic is available through accelerated programs. It will solely depend on the subject matter you are studying.

How will attending an online accelerated degree benefit me?

Accelerated doctoral programs have several benefits besides the obvious, which is earning your degree much faster than the usual four to six years or more.

By studying through an accelerated online program, you can save money on the cost of tuition. Most online programs are cheaper anyway. This helps you in two ways. First, you spend less on your doctoral program, and secondly, you can begin your career or obtain your promotion quicker; therefore, earning a higher salary quicker.

Is there a disadvantage to accelerated doctoral degrees?

An accelerated online program, since it covers a lot rather fast, may demand more of your immediate attention to cover the fast pace of the online courses. When considering an accelerated online program, think about both the pros and cons before committing.

Are all online distance learning programs considered “fast” degrees?

Not necessarily. Most online degree programs tend to go at the same speed as traditional classes do; however, the time spent may depend on your dedication to the program. Online classes often have deadlines to meet.

However, accelerated programs are noted as such, so you can expect to earn your master’s degree or doctoral degree in less time than usual.

Is earning a doctoral degree online at an accelerated time period frowned upon?

In general, earning an accelerated online doctoral degree is acceptable; however, it’s worth researching before signing on to a program.

For some doctoral degrees, such as those requiring extensive research and clinical work, you may want to invest in a full-time program. You may also want to consider if your program will require a dissertation or capstone project as well.

Is an accelerated Ph.D. or doctoral program worth it? Will it save me that much time and money?

Whether or not an accelerated doctoral program is worth it depends largely on your individual circumstances and goals. It could save you time and money, depending on how quickly you are able to complete your coursework and dissertation. However, it could also be more costly and time-consuming, depending on factors such as the specific requirements of the program.

Additionally, it could be beneficial in terms of networking and preparation for a career in academia. Therefore, it is important to fully consider all factors before deciding to pursue an accelerated program.
