Read the case below. In a 400- to 1000-word essay make an ethical argument that answers the question at the end of the case—Would you approve of this experiment?—based on "rules," legal standards, ethical principles, institutional policies, etc.

In this assignment, rules will be the key to the reasoning that supports your thesis statement. Your essay must show that you have thought broadly about rules and should discuss at least two different kinds of rules (e.g., legal standards, ethical principles, institutional policies, etc.). The relative importance of the rules should be explicitly articulated.

A researcher is planning to test a new medication in dogs, ultimately for human use. The medication may prove useful in relieving pain associated with severe burns. To conduct the experiment, they will use two groups of 12 dogs each, an experimental group and a control group. All dogs in both the experimental group and control group will receive a burn on the back. All dogs in both groups will receive standard of care treatment for the burns, including standard analgesics, bandaging, etc. But only one group will receive the experimental medication under study. For both groups, again, the researcher will also attempt to measure the degree of pain and discomfort by touching the burns to evoke a response, such as behavioral cues, heart rate, and blood pressure.
