I don't see where this has been discussed before. Well, it's a new program: https://www.tamiu.edu/newsinfo/2021/05/tamaiucjphdd50321.shtml Texas A&M International University offers a hybrid Ph.D. in Criminal Justice. The first semester is on-campus/face-to-face and subsequent semesters are online. I think that's pretty neat if you live in the area (Laredo, TX). It requires 49 credits if you're entering with an MA/MS or 52 credits if you're entering with a J.D. https://www.tamiu.edu/gradschool/phdcj/index.shtml I am thrilled to see how rapidly online doctoral programs in criminal justice have increased. I remember the time when online Walden, Capella (no longer offering), and Nova Southeastern had an online doctorate in criminal justice. I will use this thread to share other schools offering a comprehensive Ph.D. in Criminal Justice/Criminology online/hybrid. Please add if I missed any program. Listed in alphabetical order: 1. California University of Pennsylvania Doctor of Criminal Justice (D.CJ.) Online w/one required residency https://www.calu.edu/academics/graduate/doctoral/criminal-justice/index.aspx 2. 28-year-old Washington State University grad student arrested in University of Idaho killings

A suspect in the brutal slayings of four University of Idaho students — crimes that have "shaken our community" — was arrested in Pennsylvania, authorities said Friday.

Bryan Christopher Kohberger, 28, a resident of Pullman, Washington, was apprehended in Albrightsville in northeastern Pennsylvania , about 2,500 miles from the Idaho campus, officials said.

He'll be charged with four counts of first-degree murder and burglary, for allegedly breaking into the Moscow, Idaho, home with the intent to commit a felony, authorities said.

DNA evidence played a key role in linking the murders to Kohberger, two law enforcement sources familiar with the investigation told NBC News.

The shocking crimes have captivated the nation during these past seven weeks, generating about 19,000 tips from the public that police said were crucial to the probe.

"These murders have shaken our community and no arrest will ever bring back these young students," Moscow Police Chief James Fry told reporters in Idaho. "However, we do believe justice will be found through the criminal process."

From top left, Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Ethan Chapin and Xana Kernodle.

Ethan Chapin, 20, of Conway, Washington; Madison Mogen, 21, of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho; Xana Kernodle, 20, of Avondale, Arizona; and Kaylee Goncalves, 21, of Rathdrum, Idaho, were killed on Nov. 13.

Three of the victims shared the home in which they died — Goncalves, Mogen and Kernodle — while Kernodle’s boyfriend, Chapin, was staying overnight, according to investigators.

Kohberger is due back in court in Pennsylvania on Tuesday when he’ll opt to fight or waive extradition to Idaho, according to Latah County prosecuting attorney Bill Thompson.

Washington State University Provost Elizabeth Chilton said the murders have “shaken everyone in the region,” which includes overlapping college communities, and she thanked law enforcement for making an arrest.

In a statement Friday evening, Washington State University said Kohberger is a graduate student at its main campus, 9 miles from Moscow.

The institution said it assisted investigators with the execution Friday morning of search warrants at his on-campus apartment and office.

The suspect is a doctoral student who completed his first semester in criminal justice, the university said.

By nightfall, forensic experts were inside a second-floor student apartment in Pullman that was cordoned off with yellow police tape. Local authorities were also on the scene standing watch.

Justin Williams, 34, who lives in the same building as the taped-off apartment, said he found out about the suspect after two FBI agents knocked on his door earlier in the day.

During the 15 minute questioning, Williams told them he’d only crossed paths with Kohberger once — last June when he saw Kohberger checking his mailbox.

At the time, he said nothing seemed out of the ordinary, but the two didn’t speak.

“He didn’t act weird. He just seemed quiet and kept to himself,” Williams said. “Everyone usually just sticks to themselves. But he lives right next to me and I have kids.”

Aryan Deshwal, another apartment resident and graduate student, said Friday night the stabbing has stressed out the complex's residents.

“It’s so scary right now,” he said, adding that the four murders have dominated conversations among residents, even over the holiday break.

“The killings have been hovering over the community," he said.

Prosecutor pleads for more tips

The prosecutor said investigators were still in need of more information and pleaded with Idaho residents to come forward with anything they knew about  Kohberger.

“This is not the end of this investigation,” Thompson said. “In fact, this is a new beginning.”

Investigators still need the public's help to “understand fully everything there is to know not only about the individual but what happened and why," according to Thompson.

Police and prosecutors on Friday revealed few details about the arrest, such as a possible motive, how the suspect might know the victims and what tips or evidence first led detectives to Kohberger.

A probable cause affidavit, with details supporting Kohberger's arrest, is sealed and cannot be made public until he sets foot in Idaho and is served with those papers in court, authorities said.

Fry, the police chief, appeared to say that Kohberger is the only suspect in this case.

“What I can tell you is that we have an individual in custody who committed these horrible crimes and I do believe our community is safe," he said.

The "sleepless" nights for police before arrest

Authorities in Idaho thanked the FBI and Pennsylvania state police for their help in taking Kohberger into custody.

Fry appeared to admit there were several days between the moment detectives concluded Kohberger was their suspect and the time when handcuffs were finally placed on the graduate student.

“I can tell you, for a lot of law enforcement,  it was a fairly sleepless couple of days," the Moscow police chief said.

A Hyundai Elantra was taken away from the person's home in Pennsylvania on Friday, law enforcement sources said.

Police in Moscow had been looking for a white Hyundai Elantra as a possible piece of evidence.

Arrest a "huge weight" off loved one's shoulders

The mother of one of the four students told NBC News on Friday that a huge weight had been lifted with the arrest of a suspect.

Cara Northington, the mother of Xana Kernodle, said she learned of an arrest after waking up and speaking to a friend. All she has been able to think about is who would have killed her daughter and her friends as she held out hope that there would be a break in the case.

“It’s been a nightmare. This whole thing has been a nightmare, literally,” Northington said. “But I feel like a huge weight has been lifted off my shoulders.”

She added that she is unfamiliar with the person who was arrested Friday in Pennsylvania, but is relieved he was apprehended.

“A lot of the grief was not knowing who this was, knowing that whoever was responsible for that is still out there,” she said. “So yeah, this definitely takes a lot of the grief that we were experiencing off our shoulders.”

Northington said she’s also grateful to the support from strangers across the country and to law enforcement. Authorities believe they were killed inside the apartment house while they slept, although some had defensive wounds.

Police were also still looking for the weapon, believed to be a large knife, Frey said Friday.

Two other roommates were home at the time of the slayings in the early morning of Nov. 13, but police said they were not believed to have been involved in the crime.

They were asleep during the stabbings, and one of their cellphones was used to call 911 when they woke up later that morning, detectives said.

The investigation has been led by Moscow police, with dozens of state and federal agents providing forensic analysis of a scene that experts say had been complicated by the nature of the crime — a quadruple homicide — and the fact that the roommates would host parties.

Moscow Police monitor the residence where four University of Idaho students were killed in Moscow, Idaho, on Nov. 30, 2022.

As weeks went by without an arrest or a person of interest named, the case drew attention from internet sleuths , leading police to dispel unfounded claims on social media.

Fry insisted that the case was not cold.

He also declined to speak in detail about the case or investigators’ best leads, telling NBC News last week that police must protect the integrity of the investigation and didn't want to taint a potential jury pool if there was a trial.

“I know that’s very frustrating,” Fry said. “It’s frustrating to family members and [the] community, but our end goal is to bring somebody to justice for those families and for those victims.”

The case was initially dogged by mixed messaging from authorities, who first told the public that the “targeted attack” posed no lingering threat to the community. But Fry, days later, said he couldn’t say where the killer or killers may be.

Keeping quiet was correct way to go, chief says

Fry on Friday defended his handling of the case, saying it was crucial to keep information "very, very tight.”

“One-hundred percent, (we) will stand behind how we handed this investigation," Fry said. “We want to have a situation where when this goes to trial there is no doubt that we did everything right.”

An arrest comes as a “celebration of life” was planned later Friday for two of the roommates, Goncalves and Mogen.

Shanon Gray, a lawyer for Goncalves’ loved ones, said of his clients: “The family is relieved that the authorities have someone in custody and now the journey through the criminal justice system begins.”

University of Idaho murders 1 year later: Where the case stands

Four students were killed in an off-campus house on Nov. 13, 2022.

Monday marks one year since four University of Idaho students were stabbed to death in a gruesome home invasion that garnered intrigue from people across the nation.

In the early hours of Nov. 13, 2022, roommates Kaylee Goncalves , Madison Mogen and Xana Kernodle, and Kernodle's boyfriend Ethan Chapin , were killed inside the girls' off-campus house in Moscow, Idaho. Two other roommates survived.

MORE: Idaho college murders: The complete timeline of events

After an intensive six-week search for a suspect, 28-year-old Bryan Kohberger, a criminology Ph.D. student at nearby Washington State University, was arrested on Dec. 30 at his family's Pennsylvania home.

Here's what you need to know as the case against Kohberger moves forward :

The shocking crime

One of the surviving roommates said she woke up around 4 a.m. on Nov. 13, 2022, from what sounded like Goncalves playing with her dog in one of the third-floor bedrooms, according to court documents.

"A short time" after, the roommate said "she heard who she thought was Goncalves say something to the effect of 'there's someone here,'" the documents said. But that could have been Kernodle on her phone because records showed she was on TikTok at about 4:12 a.m., the affidavit said.

The roommate said "she looked out of her bedroom but did not see anything when she heard the comment about someone being in the house," the documents said. "She opened her door a second time when she heard what she thought was crying coming from Kernodle's room."

The roommate "then said she heard a male voice say something to the effect of 'it's ok, I'm going to help you,'" according to the documents.

The roommate said she opened her door again after she heard the crying -- and then saw a "figure clad in black clothing and a mask that covered the person's mouth and nose walking towards her," who she described as "5'10" or taller, male, not very muscular, but athletically built with bushy eyebrows," and who "walked past" her "towards the back sliding glass door" as the roommate stood in "frozen shock," according to a police affidavit.

Who were the victims?

Kaylee Goncalves, 21, and Madison Mogen, 21, were lifelong best friends and inseparable. Goncalves was set to graduate in December 2022 and move to Texas.

Goncalves' sister, Alivea Goncalves, considered Mogen a sister, too. She said she was comforted by the fact that the best friends were in the same bed together in their final moments.

"If I couldn't have been there to hold their hands and to take that pain from them, at least they had each other," she told ABC News.

phd criminal justice tamiu

The two other victims were 20-year-old Xana Kernodle, and her boyfriend, 20-year-old Ethan Chapin.

Chapin was a triplet. His brother and sister also attend the University of Idaho.

Chapin and Kernodle were the "perfect pair" who had an "unstoppable, loving relationship," a surviving roommate said in a statement in December.

"They both would look at each other with so much love," she said.

phd criminal justice tamiu

Pieces of evidence

After the victims were discovered, authorities reviewed surveillance video from the area and saw the suspect's white Hyundai Elantra go by the victims' house three times, before entering the area for a fourth time at 4:04 a.m, according to the affidavit.

Police said they traced the car's travel that night back to nearby Pullman, Washington, where the suspect lived while attending Washington State.

Kohberger's phone was tracked heading to Moscow before the attack and as the driver of the white Elantra returned to Pullman. However, the phone was off from 2:47 a.m. to 4:48 a.m., which "is consistent with Kohberger attempting to conceal his location during the quadruple homicide," the document said.

MORE: Idaho authorities probe Amazon 'click activity' for knives possibly connected to college killings

His phone was near the victims' house at least 12 times before the murders, at least as far back as August, the document said.

DNA from the suspect was also recovered on a knife sheath left on Mogen's bed, according to the documents.

Where does the case stand?

Kohberger is charged with four counts of first-degree murder and one count of burglary. He could face the death penalty if convicted.

The former Ph.D. student declined to offer a plea at his arraignment in May, so the judge entered a not guilty plea on his behalf.

phd criminal justice tamiu

MORE: Trial for Idaho college killings suspect Bryan Kohberger delayed indefinitely

Kohberger's lawyers have said their client wasn't in the home where the homicides occurred and was driving around alone that night.

In August, Kohberger waived his right to a speedy trial, indefinitely delaying what was supposed to be an Oct. 2 start date.

A new trial date has not been set.

What possible hurdles are ahead during trial?

The DNA discovered on the button snap of the knife sheath that was found near Mogen's body is a critical linchpin for the prosecution in what is a largely circumstantial case.

That DNA, authorities argued, undeniably links Kohberger to the crime scene, saying that DNA "showed a statistical match" with a cheek swab taken directly from Kohberger after his arrest.

phd criminal justice tamiu

Kohberger's attorneys have attempted to cast doubt on the strength of investigators' evidence and whether it pointed irrefutably to just their client, including the DNA. The defense has repeatedly asked for more information on the genealogical analyses used to zero in on Kohberger, and have pushed back on investigators' analysis that the DNA is a statistical match.

Kohberger's attorneys also highlight what they called a "total lack of DNA evidence" from the victims in Kohberger's home or car.

"There are so many layers that make this an extraordinary case -- and the defense is going to attack any aspect of it that they see as vulnerable," David Calviello, a former New Jersey prosecutor who is now a criminal defense attorney, told ABC News in August. "It makes sense for them to take shots at how certain evidence was presented to the grand jury -- whether there were missed steps, cut corners, chain of custody problems, contamination -- or not. "

The knife used in the murders has not been recovered.

A series of now-unsealed search warrant documents show investigators have sought records of Amazon purchases and click history data for an Amazon customer including "all detailed customer click activity pertaining to knives and accessories," as well as a long list of information that could flesh out the customer's full shopping movements and interests on the site, like items that were wish-listed or saved for later. If prosecutors can link Kohberger to the purchase of a knife that could have been used in the killings, experts say that could help bolster their case.

What will happen to the house?

The University of Idaho announced in February that the house where the four students were killed would be torn down, with university President Scott Green calling it "a healing step."

In June, a university spokesperson said the school planned to demolish the house before students returned to campus in the fall.

In July, the university announced a sudden halt to the demolition plans as they removed asbestos and lead from the home -- and amid objections from some of the victims' families who expressed concern that demolishing the house before Kohberger's trial could cause unanticipated problems for prosecutors as they try to secure a guilty verdict.

phd criminal justice tamiu

About two weeks after Kohberger waived his speedy right to a trial in August, university officials decided they would hold off on tearing down the home until at least the end of the fall semester, which ends in mid-December.

With no new trial date set, prosecutors asked the University of Idaho for access to the house.

The university said FBI agents would be at the house on Oct. 31 and Nov. 1 "to get documentation to construct visual and audio exhibits and a physical model of the home."

"While the university still intends to demolish the home, it will not be done this semester," the university said on Oct. 31.

The families

Ethan Chapin, who was a triplet, had been planning his 21st birthday with his siblings "forever," his parents said. Last month, his brother, Hunter, and sister, Maizie, turned 21 without him.

PHOTO: Ethan Chapin surfs on Priest Lake in northern Idaho in this family photo from July 2022.

As the Chapins face one year without Ethan, they said they plan on acknowledging Nov. 13 with a private fundraiser for their foundation, Ethan's Smile Foundation, to help provide scholarships to post-high school students so that they can follow their dreams. The Chapins said they can't think of a better way to honor their son than to support education.

"Ethan stood for love, kindness, laughter and loyalty," his mother, Stacy Chapin, told ABC News. "He was the very best."

Kaylee Goncalves' dad, Steve Goncalves, said Kaylee's younger siblings are now grappling with their own birthdays. He said "they don't want to be older than their sister."

phd criminal justice tamiu

To Steve Goncalves, Nov. 13 is not an anniversary.

"This is more like a memorial -- some type of an event that you have to look at and think about, but it's not something that you ever look forward to," he told ABC News.

"My daughter has allowed me to meet people across the world through her life and memory and her beauty. And I'll thank her one day when I see her," Steve Goncalves said. "I'll tell her how much she impacted the world and how proud of her I am."
