'Race Gurram' Review: This Horse Is Worth Betting On

Allu Arjun and director Surender Reddy have teamed up for the first time for Race Gurram. Surender Reddy is known for his stylish execution and Allu Arjun has got Stylish Star Tag. Were they able to come up with a stylish entertainer? Let us see.

Story: Ram (Shyam) and Lakshman alias Lucky (Allu Arjun) are brothers played by Shyam and Bunny respectively. In quintessential Tom and Jerry style, they are constantly playing pranks and fighting with each other. While Ram is a police officer, Lucky is a happy-go-lucky guy upto no good. And in comes the villain into their little world in the form of Siva Reddy (Ravi Kishan) who plans to kill Ram who tries to stop his nefarious activities. Lucky gets to know about this and beats up Siva Reddy. The rest of the plot shows how Siva Reddy plots revenge and how Lucky along with his brother strikes back. All in all, it’s Bunny’s show all along.

Artistes’ Performance: The role is a cakewalk for Allu Arjun and his total involvement is visible in every frame from beginning to end. His comic timing is perfect and he outdoes himself. One additional touch that is bound to stay with his fans for a long time is the way in which he says ‘Devuda’. Of course, it goes without saying that Allu Arjun rocks when it comes to song and dance. But be warned, his fans will miss out on some of his awesome moves in Race Gurram.

Coming to the leading lady Shruti Haasan, her character too provides enough comedy and she does manage her timing with Bunny.

The biggest drawback though is the villain Ravi Kishen. He fails to be cruel and you can make out that he did not put in his best.

On the other hand, Prakash Raj has an interesting character, but that goes missing some where along the film.

Brahmanandam as ‘Kill Bill Pandey’ puts in a performance that will be remembered for a long time. Shyam too gets to play a good role after Kick. As for the others, they put in okay performances.

Technical Expertise: One of the essential ingredients of a hit film are hit songs. While Thaman’s audio has been a huge hit, the placement of the songs within the script is not appropriate. Similarly, the choreography is not up to the mark. However, the background score is good and Thaman gets full marks for it. Cinematography by Manoj Paramahamsa is rich and he captures each frame beautifully.

But all the films in recent times, the film suffers due to bad editing. For starters, the film need not be so long. Had the editor chopped off some scenes, it would have made the film more gripping.

The producers have spent lots of money and it is visible in the efforts of cinematographer and the director.

The dialogues of Bunny are crowd-pullers and keep you glued through out. So, Surender Reddy once again manages to come up with an action-packed entertainer. The story may be routine, but it does hold your attention.

Analysis:   If the review can be wrapped up in one line then it would be – It is Bunny’s film through and through. The film has its share of loopholes and there are places where it defies logic. But if you stop picking on the minuses and simply relax and enjoy the film, then the film is what one can call total paisa vasool. As Surender Reddy has promised, he delivers a film laced with oodles of entertainment, ample action and to top it all, Allu Arjun at his energetic best.

There is one dialogue where Posani Krishnamurali says, ‘Mari ala ela chestamayya logic lekunda’ when Bunny approaches him for help. Though the film’s plot and some scenes have no logic, the makers have made sure that the entertainment quotient more than makes up for it.

Since it is hard to come up with a commercial entertainer with logic, the director does not bother to make any efforts to retain logic. Instead, he goes overboard and makes an out and out entertainer with doses of family sentiment.

Surender Reddy has moulded Race Gurram on the lines of a Bollywood entertainer. But to cater to the Telugu audience, he tried to throw in a villain, a small love story and some family sentiments to complete the mix.

In the process, the film lacks pace at some places, but the pace picks up during the climax and Brahmanandam’s entry turns out to be a trump card for Race Gurram.

In all, for those looking out for a summer entertainer, Race Gurram is the perfect movie.

The fact that there are no other releases during this time will also be a huge plus for the film. The film is likely to gallop to the success mark.

Hyderabad: Sohel Syed who started his career as an actor in TV serials shot to fame with Bigg Boss. Sohel, who had earlier played minor roles in some popular movies, is now testing his luck as an actor.

He recently joined hands with A.R Abhi for the romantic comedy 'Lucky Lakshman.' The trailer had grabbed the attention of the audience. Featuring some noted actors, the movie finally hit the theatres on 30 December. Here's our review of the film:

Lucky Lakshman (Sohel) is a happy-go-lucky guy who dreams of becoming a billionaire in simple ways. Then, he decides that marrying a rich girl will make him rich in a much easier way and starts his search to find a girl. He finally manages to find a rich girl and tries to woo her. Does the girl fall in love with Lakshman? Is she really rich? Does Lakshman's dream of becoming a millionaire come true? What life lessons does he learn in his journey? What happens in the end?—these form the crux of the story.

Performances and technical aspects

Sohel is very impressive in his role and his energetic performance is one of the biggest plus points of the movie. He is the heart and soul of the film and carries the entire film on his shoulders. Sohel has given his best not only in romantic and comedy scenes but also carried the emotional scenes well.

Moksha, the lead actress, is good in her role and manages to impress the audience with her looks. She shares a striking chemistry with Sohel.

Devi Prasad and Sameer have delivered honest performances. Bigg Boss fame Geetu Royal who plays a minor role is good. Rachcha Ravi and Yadamma Raju's comedy works out well.

A.R Abhi directed the movie and also wrote the screenplay and dialogues. His directional skills are quite impressive. Despite this being his first film, Abhi has succeeded in impressing the audience with his engaging narration. His dialogues are decent, especially in the emotional scenes. The production values are quite good and Anup Ruben's music is soothing. The BGM is good at times. The cinematographer has delivered some colourful visuals. The runtime is crisp.

Entertainment is one of the biggest plus points of the film. Also, Sohel's energetic performance is quite impressive. Some of the comedy scenes are hilarious and will tickle your funny bones. The emotional scenes are also handled really well. Fresh comedy and emotional scenes work big time for the film.

…What doesn't

The love story between the lead pair could have been better. The film takes a while to enter its main story. While the scenes are not that bad, a quick pace would have made it even better.

Final verdict

Overall, 'Lucky Lakshman' is a well-made film with good comedy and sensible emotions. As the movie is loaded with all the commercial elements, it would be an entertaining watch, especially for Sohel's fans. Audiences who are okay with a slow-paced screenplay can happily watch the film.

'Lucky Lakshman' is a decent one-time watch this weekend.

Lucky Lakshman is a romantic comedy entertainer movie directed by debut director AR Abhi. The film has Syed Sohel & Mokksha playing lead roles while Devi Prasad, Raja Ravindra, Sameer, Kadambari Kiran, Anurag, Ameen, Rohi Nayan, Sridevi Kumar, Geethuroyal, Yadammaraju, Master Sameer, Master Ayaan, Master Karthikeya & others in the supporting roles. The Music is composed by Anup Rubens. The film is produced by Haritha Gogineni under Dattatreya Media banner.

The film is about a middle-class guy named Lucky Lakshman (Sohel). He hates his father as he feels his father couldn’t give him a rich life. Lakshman later falls in love with Shraddha (Mokksha) in his first year of college but eventually breaks up in the final year. After college Laksham gets the idea to start a marriage bureau. What life lessons will he learn in this whole process forms the rest of the story.

What about on-screen performances?

Big Boss fame Sohel does a pretty decent job with the film. He gets ample scope to showcase different emotions and he tried to use the opportunity to the best of his abilities. He surely is a potential actor but he still needs to work a bit on his body language and dialogue delivery.

Heroine Mokksha looks pretty on screen and does well in the love portions. Her chemistry with Sohel is good.

The actors who played Sohel’s friends- Anurag & Ameen are fine in their parts but few noticeable actors could have made a big difference to the film.

Devi Prasad scores well on the emotional front towards the end as the hero’s father while Sameer makes his presence felt in a short role as the coffee shop owner.

The rest of the cast are okay in their respective supporting roles.

What about off-screen talents?

Director AR Abhi’s presentation is trendy. But he should have made the narrative a bit more crisper. His story lacks novelty and there is no scene that looks fresh on screen. His screenplay too is pretty half-baked. The triangle phone conversations, a few marriage bureau scenes, and the emotional ending are the only scenes that work in the film.

Cinematography by I. Andrew is good while the editing by Prawin Pudi needed more crispness.

The songs by Anup Rubens fail to register. The title song is the only song that looked okay. His background score is fine.

Bigg Boss fame and talented actor Sohel is coming up with a film titled Lucky Lakshman. This is an out-and-out entertainer and stars Mokksha as the leading lady. Directed by AR Abhi, the film is produced by Haritha Gogineni. Ahead of the film’s release tomorrow, we interacted with Sohel, and here is the transcript.

Do you think social media is becoming negative?

If we post something positive, the feedback will be almost nil. Recently I gave a strong warning to all those who comment negatively. This particular post got more reach than Chiru sir’s Waltair Veerayya press meet. I am not someone who will act both on camera and off camera.

What made you choose Lucky Lakshman?

The film has a cute story. I am selecting different stories, such as Boot Cut Balraju and Mr. Pregnant, and now I want to do something that can be enjoyed by family audience. The movie will be close to reality and will be a good entertainer.

Do you think you would be able to pull off a class role?

My role would be a bit innocent, the film can be seen by all age groups, and there isn’t any vulgarity. So there won’t be any sense of discomfort while watching the movie. We made sure the film was clean and neat. So there need not be any worry about this aspect.

How confident are you regarding the film’s business?

We gave our best. I believe that it is all up to the audience to decide a film’s fate. We have put in our hundred percent effort. I showed the movie to a senior producer, who told me I was safe after watching it. We are going for own release.

How different is it to act in films and serials?

Generally, the directors won’t say cut in serials, which differentiates serials from films. Serials helped me to perform well in emotional scenes. I am habituated to doing emotional scenes without even using glycerin.
