Quality Circles (QCs) are a popular tool to get solved work related problems, mainly in manufacturing organizations by groups of workers themselves by following a prescribed methodology. By solving the problems and also making desirable improvements, quality circles contribute in increasing the quality, productivity and safety of the operations. More importantly the workers develop a positive and problem solving attitude by participating in the QC activities and derive more job satisfaction. The paper gives a step by step account of the implementation of the quality circles in a medium scale industry right from introduction to successful execution. A case study of implementing the QC concept in a Powder Coating Unit which illustrates how the QCs help in improving the productivity has been discussed. The factors which are important for the success of the quality circles are also explained. The study can serve as a guide and would be useful for the small and medium industries who are interested in introducing the quality circles.

There is a rising need for infrastructural development in the city of Bangalore. As there are over 800 construction, civil engineering, building and development firms in and around the city, there is high competition. One of the factors which proves to be imperative in giving a competitive edge to these firms is good quality of their work among others like improved productivity and timely completion of their projects. Quality circles (QC) have been found to be a simple and productive technique of Total Quality Management (TQM) , despite having low cost of quality. Although QC is native to the production industry, it has been proposed to be implementable in construction industry. QC's have never reportedly been used in the Indian construction industry. As the construction industry is significantly different from the production industry and the Indian organisational culture is also very different as compared to many countries like Japan where QC's thrive, this paper seeks to analyse and study the applicability of QCs as an efficient TQM method to construction projects in and around Bangalore city. This paper seeks to accomplish this by highlighting the favourable conditions and hindrances that application of QC's might face in Indian construction industry. The research methodology includes a detailed literature review and a questionnaire survey. The data was analysed using Index Average Method and percentage representations, both accompanied by descriptive analysis. Based on the analysis of the data obtained from the survey it was concluded that the Indian construction industry possesses various conditions which prove to be highly favourable towards the application of QC, however the temporary nature of the teams formed on construction projects, and the present organisational culture which might not support participative management have been found to be questionable conditions, which require improvement.

This paper focuses on exploring the conceptualization, benefits, and challenges of implementing play-based learning (PBL) among Eritrean preschool educators. The study was grounded on the social cognitive theory and a qualitative research approach was applied to explore the research objectives. A semi-structured interview was conducted with nine teachers, six principals, and two pre-primary education curriculum developers. Using inductive approach, interviews were thematically analyzed. The study found discrepancies between participants’ views and their implementation. The findings indicate that most of the participants viewed PBL as incorporating both free play and guided play. Although free play is useful in the overall development of children, this study revealed that it cannot be used effectively as an instrument to teach lessons that have specific academic objectives such as numeracy and literacy skills. Moreover, the researchers sought to investigate the actual practices of PBL. The study found that the majority of educators were placed at the extremes of the Child Adult Involvement Continuum: free play and direct instruction. Furthermore, the results revealed that teachers faced various challenges as they tried to implement PBL, but the most common barrier discussed by interviewees was the lack of awareness of parents and principals towards PBL among others. Finally, the study concluded that the reason teachers lie at the two extremes of the Child Adults Involvement Continuum could be due to their views towards PBL, its benefits, and the challenges they face in implementing it. The study contributes to the ongoing research on how PBL is conceived and integrated into the pre-primary school context through the Eritrean perspective. The findings can inform future professional development for practitioners.
