The role of the research scientist is to set up and carry through experiments in order to broaden mankind’s scientific knowledge in a particular area. The range of areas in which research scientists work is huge and varied.

You could work for a number of organisations, including Universities, governments or businesses, but the options available to you would completely depend on your specialisms.

Your day to day work could entail putting together research proposals and making sure you had the funds needed to carry out the work, the actual experiments themselves, and the analysis of the data that was found in the research.

Many research scientists work in teams with a variety of support staff, and they are found in a variety of industries, from pharmaceuticals to marine exploration.

Salary & benefits

If you’re currently studying for a research PhD, you can be awarded around £14,000 per year whilst you study. Postdoctoral research fellows tend to earn between £30,000 and £35,000 a year, whilst lecturers and professors tend to earn salaries around the £60,000 mark.

If you’re working in industry, however, as a research scientist you would be looking at a salary starting around £24,000, but which could rise above £40,000 in time and with career progress.

Working hours

Hours are completely dependent on where you work, but in a University you would be expected to work 9-5 Monday to Friday, whereas within industry you could be expected to work in more of a shift pattern, which might include evenings and weekends.

Depending on your field and specialty, you might also be expected to travel nationally and internationally, for conferences or working in particular locations.

You’re going to have to do Uni for this one, there’s no other way. You’ll need at least a 2.1 in your chosen science subject to begin with, and then you’d be expected to go on towards postgraduate qualifications.

Most employers will expect you to be working towards PhD level, or have already completed it, in order to become a research scientist. It is however, possible to begin working and studying part-time within some parts of the industry.

Training & progression

Whilst your training is mostly done at Uni level, and given the research nature of the job, is often done by yourself, there are people who are there to guide you along.

You’ll need the advice of specialists in your field to keep up to date with the latest developments, and they’ll guide you through the hardest parts of your doctorate.

Your progression will very much depend on whether you choose an industrial or academic route, but there is plenty of room for development within both, whether you decide you want to be a Professor or an industry-leading scientist, and the nature of the job means you will always be in demand.

As a Sr Clinical Scientist you will be joining the world’s largest & most comprehensive clinical research organisation, powered by healthcare intelligence.

What you will be doing:  

  • May lead or support a study or studies, depending on size/complexity. If lead, accountable for the clinical/scientific execution of the protocol.
  • As lead, will be responsible for the following:
  • Clinical point of contact for scientific issues/questions for internal and external stakeholders (e.g., IRB, sites)
  • Responsible for trial design and endpoint development in collaboration with CD
  • Leads the Medical Monitoring (MM) team in performing MM activities, including development of the Medical Monitoring Plan (MMP) and review of SAE reports
  • Sets up/supports SAC, DMC, adjudication committees
  • Protocols/amendments – collaborates with medical writer, participates in governance committee review
  • Authors protocol clarification letters
  • Contributor to study specific documents (e.g., SMP)
  • Reviews/updates informed consent
  • Provides scientific input to SM for data management activities (e.g., EDC, DRP, CRFs)
  • Monitors data issues requiring clinical input
  • Monitors central lab reports and other external data for safety and critical values
  • Prepares scientific slides, attends and presents protocol information at Investigator Meeting
  • Scientific lead on Clinical Trial Team (CTT)
  • Reviews specs, initiates allocation (randomization) request form and approval schedule in allocation schedule generation system
  • Coordinates planning of lab, bio specimens and imaging specifications
  • Co- authors newsletters with SM
  • Participates in Database lock activities Collaboratively plans CSRs, CTDs/WMAs with medical writing
  • Supports publications/presentations as needed
  • Reconciles and review all protocol deviation classifications in SPECTRUM
  • Assesses and prepares protocol deviation list for CSR
  • Collaborates with medical writing to develop trial results communication for investigators
  • Provides scientific assessment for Operational Reviews
  • Supports SM/MW activities as needed to achieve CTT deliverables.
  • Provides clinical specifications to SM to support interactions with external vendors (e.g., IVRS, ePRO)
  • May act as mentor to other CSs

What you need to have: 

Educational Requirements

  • BS/BA in Life Sciences with 7+ yrs clinical research experience
  • MS/PhD in Life Sciences with 5+ years clinical research experience
  • If no degree in Life Sciences, must have significant experience in clinical development (>11 years)

 Minimum Years of Experience

  • Minimum 2 years pharmaceutical and/or clinical drug development experience as a lead CS required.
  • Medical monitoring experience required

Experience conducted Oncology trials is required

  • Excellent Excel and PP skills required
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to travel up to 15% (might include international travel) 
  • To qualify, applicants must be legally authorized to work in the Canada or US, and should not require, now or in the future, sponsorship for employment visa status

BXDA's Strategic Planning and Analytics Unit serves as the internal management consulting arm of the Office. The unit uses cutting-edge data science and research analytics to support the Office's application of data-driven policies and practices. This unit is responsible for measuring office performance on prosecution indicators, evaluating the effects of policies and initiatives, conducting strategic analysis, and promoting transparency. The unit also manages the Office's grants, which provide critical funding to support prosecutorial practices and victims of crime in the Bronx. The data engineer will be an integral member of our data analytics team working collaboratively with a diverse team of analysts and alongside information technology and justice system practitioners. This position demands strong SQL and data management skills to assist with the expansion and maintenance of workflows in a Microsoft Azure data analytics and reporting pipeline. This position offers an opportunity to apply strong technical and analytic abilities to inform the implementation of fair and objective public safety policies and procedures. JOB RESPONSIBILITIES: Helping lead a system of reporting and analytic operations including database queries, updating and expanding stored procedures by leveraging programming languages (e.g., SQL, R, Azure data factory) to support reports and Power BI dashboards; Develop, implement, and document data management procedures and standards to ensure data quality and accuracy in the Unit’s reporting; Use advanced data transformation techniques (i.e., ETL) to standardize, check, clean, merge, and integrate disparate datasets from complex criminal justice databases; Work closely with data analysts conducting quantitative data analysis and research or evaluation projects using a range of criminal justice administrative data sources; Collaborate with members of the Information Technology Unit in support of the goals of the Strategic Planning & Analytics unit; Help identify relevant data for measuring office performance and outcomes, and for use in statistical analysis to assess impacts and trends where accuracy is paramount; Perform all other related duties and projects as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS: Minimum of a Masters degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Information Technology, Data Science, or a related field Minimum of four years of proven experience with SQL databases, ORACLE, XML, JSON or similar data systems a related; master’s degree may substitute for two years Experience using SQL, Azure Data Factory, SSIS, or similar database pipeline solutions Experience with data analysis programming languages such as R, SAS, PYTHON, Stata or similar. We search for a professional with prior applicable experience in a relevant social science field, and skills in executing mixed-methods (qualitative and quantitative) research studies, project management, and on-time, on-budget project execution.

General instruction provided by the supervisor as needed. May interpret study results in collaboration with supervisor or PI.
  • Participate in the development and administration of survey instruments and rating scales requiring judgment in applying non-routine procedures. Analyze and summarize results for review with supervisor. Audit the accuracy and validity of data.
  • Review and audit case report forms for completion and accuracy with source documents, and ensure compliance with research protocols.
  • Conduct literature searches, and write literature summaries and manuscripts, requiring preliminary judgments after the supervisor outlines conceptual approach.
  • Build and organize data as requested by principal investigator or supervisor; use common statistical programs requiring the application of job control language in generating and organizing data.
  • Adapt new, nonstandard methods outlined by supervisor in designing and evaluating phases of research projects, (i.e., educational materials, questionnaires, strategies for recruitment, data quality control procedures and processes). May follow up with Institutional Review Board (IRB) to ensure renewals are approved and completed, seeking guidance where necessary.
  • Assist with development, communication and design of research findings to internal and external audiences, which may include web updates, social media, and/or white papers, for use in recruitment, educational, or awareness of programs, with guidance from supervisor.
  • May orient and train new staff or students.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Undergraduate degree in a relevant field of social science including public health, health services research, sociology, or anthropology and 6 months to 1 year of prior applicable experience in a relevant social science field.
  • Strong organization and project management skills, with demonstrated experience bringing projects to completion.
  • Strong writing skills with ability to publish in peer-reviewed literature.
  • Strong design and artistic skills for the purposes of presentations and data visualization.
  • Experience with NVivo or Atlas.ti software.
  • Experience using statistical software such as R or STATA.
  • Strong client facing interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to self-manage, set priorities, and easily adapt.
  • Interested in technology development methods and workflow integration in healthcare settings, especially artificial intelligence.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):

  • Bachelor of Arts degree in an applicable social science related field, or combination of education and relevant experience in an applicable social science.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):

  • General understanding of scientific theory and methods, typically gained through completion of an undergraduate degree in a related field.
  • General computer skills and ability to quickly learn and master computer programs.
  • Ability to work under deadlines with general guidance.
  • Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to complete detailed work accurately.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work with human study participants.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Frequently perform desk-based computer tasks, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
  • Occasionally stand/walk, sit, use a telephone, writing by hand, and sort/file paperwork or parts.
  • Rarely twist/bend/stoop/squat, kneel/crawl, rarely reach/work above shoulders, and operates foot and/or hand control.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • May be exposed to blood borne pathogens.
  • May be required to work non-standard, extended or weekend hours in support of research work.

The expected pay range for this position is $26.44 to $36.54 per hour.
