Sam: Hi Jack, how’s it going? Jack: Oh, all right, Sam? Yeah, all good. How are you doing? Sam: Yeah, I’m all right. How was your weekend? Jack: Pretty good. Nothing special really … Sam: So … football, then? Jack: Yeah, how did you guess! We played a match on Saturday. Sam: Really? How did it go? Jack: Yeah, really good. We beat them 4-0! Sam: Nice! Jack: Guess what? Sam: Er … you scored all the goals? Jack: No, not quite all of them … I scored two though. Sam: Sweet! Jack: Anyway, how are you? What did you get up to? Sam: Not much. I had homework most of the weekend. Jack: Yeah, me too. Sam: But I did go to see a concert on Saturday night. Jack: Really? Who’d you see? Sam: Me and Makayla went to see Blue Tigers. Jack: Oh … Was it good? Sam: It was better than good. It was amazing! The singer was brilliant! Jack: Lucky you. I didn’t know you were going … Sam: Neither did we till the last minute. Next time they come you’ll have to come too. Jack: Yeah, definitely! That would be great … if you remember to invite me.

How to talk about the weekend in English

Everyone loves the weekend. Weekends are a huge topic of conversation. Starting on Wednesday or Thursday, people will ask you about your weekend plans. When you return to work or school, you'll be asked how your weekend went. So it's helpful to have a nice range of phrases to use for these conversations.

The upcoming weekend

If you want to ask someone about the upcoming weekend in English, here are some common questions:

What are you doing this weekend?
Do you have anything going on this weekend?
Do you have any big plans for the weekend?
Do you have anything planned for this weekend?

If you have plans, you can tell people about them:

I'm driving to Baltimore with a friend.
I've got a date lined up.
Francine and I are taking the kids to the zoo.

If you don't have any plans, here are some good phrases:

I don't have anything planned.
I'll probably just stay at home and relax.
I just want to sleep in!

Of course, you might not want to know about other people's weekend plans. In that case, just wish them a happy weekend:

Enjoy your weekend!
Have a great weekend!
See you next week.

The weekend past

After the weekend is over, you can ask about it with these expressions:

How was your weekend?
Did you do anything fun over the weekend?
What did you get up to this weekend?
Did you have a good weekend?

Here are some answers:

It was awesome!
It was pretty laid-back.
I went out with some friends on Saturday.
I just puttered around the house.
I had a pretty uneventful weekend.

Things to do on the weekend

Here are some of the activities that people like to do on the weekend:

  • go out to eat
  • go out (to a bar or club)
  • see a movie
  • binge watch TV shows
  • chill out at home
  • catch up on sleep
  • lay around the house
  • do some housework
  • do some yard work
  • spend time with your family
  • take a road trip
  • go to church
  • get together with friends
  • have a cookout
  • have a house party
  • have a dinner party
  • have a big family meal
  • go shopping
  • catch up on work

Bonus: Which weekend do you mean?

One difficult part of conversations about the weekend is knowing which weekend you mean. Here are some example sentences to help you figure out what "last weekend", "this weekend", and "next weekend" mean, depending on when you say them:

Monday- Tuesday

Wednesday-Friday

Saturday-Sunday

Sample Answer

I would be happy to talk about my amazing experience from last weekend.

I had the opportunity to take part in a weekend yoga and meditation retreat last week, and it was an amazing experience. Along with a few close friends, I attended this retreat since we were both interested in mindfulness and holistic well-being. The event took place over the weekend at a tranquil mountain retreat center surrounded by breathtaking scenery.

We participated in a range of yoga classes over the course of the weekend, taught by knowledgeable teachers who placed equal emphasis on physical poses and mental calm. We also engaged in early morning and evening meditation, which helped us achieve inner calm and a close connection with ourselves.

Along with the tranquil surroundings and restorative activities, last weekend was especially memorable because of the strong sense of friendship and camaraderie I experienced with my companions. During breaks, we exchanged ideas, goals, and life stories, forging a meaningful and uplifting connection. It was breathtaking to see the sun rise over the mountains while we meditated in the mornings and to share large, satisfying meals.

I had a deep sense of inner peace and clarity after the encounter. My physical and mental well-being were restored, and I had a greater appreciation for the value of mindfulness in our hectic life. The weekend served as a reminder of how important it is to prioritize self-care and lead a balanced lifestyle.

All in all, this special weekend gave me a calm diversion from the everyday grind, enabled me to cultivate meaningful friendships, and elevated my awareness of myself. I will always cherish the experience as it was so enriching.

IELTS Speaking Part 1: Weekends

04/03/2021 02:37 PM

General Rules:

you do your homework last weekend

Here are some general rules about Part 1 that you may find useful. The point of Task 1 is for you to answer shortly to many questions. Think of it like an interview where you need to answer questions about yourself. You should:

Keep it short. When you practice, in general try to answer in 15 to 20 seconds per question.

Give at least 1 reason and 1 real-life example. again very general but try to have at least 1 real example in your answer., talk about yourself. this part is all related to you (if the question doesn't say another person)..

So, lets take a look at some questions:

Vocabulary related to the topic

Sentence starters and linking words, what do you usually do on weekends.

Well, I think I do what most people do actually . At times I hang out with friends, go to the mall, watch a movie at the movie theater or eat some snacks . Other times I stay home and either play on my PC or actually prepare for the next week. Just ordinary stuff I  guess .

My Personal Answer:

As a grown up , I  have to say that my weekends have become quite boring. What I do is either work related , or I go shopping for groceries . Of course, I do try to make things more interesting, and on occasions I'd ask a friend out or organize a hike outside the city. Something else that I really enjoy is biking, so I'd do that too if I'm  in the mood  and the weather allows it .

Did you do anything special last weekend?

Well, actually lately my weekends have been quite similar . Because of the Covid-19 pandemic , I think most of us became a bit closed , introverted  and mostly stay home. Last weekend was the same for me, as I staid home and played video games . A bit boring, I know.

What will you do next weekend?

I don't have any big plans in the coming weeks , and so I guess I'll stay mostly home and play video games . This is for my free leisure time . Of course, I will prepare for the next week, do all my assignments , do some house work and stuff like that. I don't know if I'll hang out or not.  Haven't  decided yet.

Well, I'll definitely try to stay active , that's  for sure . I try to stay in shape and keep fit as much as possible . And so... I might bike around town, or try to work out at home. I have some equipment for working out... dumbbells , a bench and some barbells with weights . So, I hope I can spend some time on myself . Apart from that, the usual as always , some shopping , some house work and so on.

What do other people in your hometown usually do on weekends?

Well, If we talk about young adults and teenagers , well most of them stay online these days. Yes, some might go out to see their friends, but most of them will stay online and either play video games , mobile games or just get stuck on social media and scroll ... It's a little weird but that our generation .

Adults will definitely try to go out of the big city. In my country, many middle aged people invest in a small land or a small villa outside of the big city for a weekend getaway . During the weekend, they might go and fix something at the property , build up something, plant vegetables or flowers and so on. Many want to prepare a place like this for their retirement , and so they will go every week, adding more and more comfort to it, until it's perfect .

Are weekends enough for you to rest for the week?

Sometimes I do feel that I need longer weekends, that's  for sure . I think it depends on how heavy my schedule is. At times, when I have a lot of projects or assignments to work on , I have to spend the whole weekend working, rather than having fun. And then, I feel that I need a few more days, to really relax .

To be honest, I didn't have a proper weekend since I was a college student . As I'm mostly self-employed and independent , I work 7 days a week , without any really free weekend. I always have something to do, and it's either related to my work, another project I come up with or dealing with family business . So, I cant remember when was the last time I could forget everything and just lie down for 2-3 days, without having to do anything.
