આપના શાસ્ત્રો માં તો કેવાય છે કે જો ચૈત્ર માસ માં જો લીમડાના મોર(ફૂલ) ને રાત્રે પાણી માં પલાળી સવારે તેનું સેવન કરવામાં આવે તો બાર મહિના સુધી કોઈજ બીમારીઓ થતી નથી. 

આપણે સૌ જાણીએ છીએ કે લીમડો એ ડાયાબીટીસ ની અંદર ઉત્તમ ઇલાજ તરીકે માનવામાં આવે છે પરંતુ તમે સાયદ નહીં જાણતા હોવ કે લીમડાનો ઉપયોગ ચામડીને લગતી સમસ્યા ઉલટી, કફ, કમળો, અરાઈ ચામડી ની સમસ્યા અને દ્રષ્ટિ ની સમસ્યામાં પણ ખૂબ જ ઉત્તમ પરિણામ આપે છે

આજે અમે તમને આ લીમડાના પાનનું સેવન કરવાના કેટલાક ફાયદા થાય છે તેના વિશે જણાવીશું 

લીમડા ના પાન ના ફાયદા અને પાકેલા લીલાપાન ના ઔષધીય પ્રયોગો

લીમડાના મોટા અને લીલા રંગ ના પાન પચ્યા પછી કડવા, આંખ માટે હિતકારી, બળતરા શાંત કરનાર, કૃમિ, કફ, અને પિત્તનો નાશ કરનાર છે. અરુચિ તથા કોઢ દૂર કરનાર છે.

લીલા કે સુકા કોઈપણ ખરજવા પર લીમડાના પાન ની બારીક રાખ દરરોજ લગાવવી. જો ખરજવું લીલું હોય તો પાન વાટીને ખરજવા પર લગાવી પાટો બાંધી દેવો. આમ આ પ્રયોગ દરરોજ કરવાથી ખરજવું મટી જાય છે.

લીમડાના પાન સાથે ચપટી હળદર, થોડુક મધ, ઘી, તલ અને જવનો લોટ લઇ પાણી સ્તાહે વાટીને તેની ધીમી આંચ પર પોટીશ બનાવી લેવી. તે ગાથ કે ગુમડા પર બાંધવાથી કે ૩-૬ કલાકે બદલતા રહેવાથી ગુમડું પાકતું નથી અને થયેલો સોજો મટી જાય છે.

લીમડાના પાન, દારુ હળદર અને જેઠીમધ નું ચૂર્ણ ઘી અને મધમાં નાખીને તેનો મલમ જેવું બનાવીને ઘા-જખમ પર લગાવવાથી ઘા જલ્દી રુઝાઈ જાય છે.

લીમડાના પાન ના પાણી થી દર્દીએ દરરોજ નહાવું. પાન નો રસ પી જી તેના પર દૂધ પીવું. ૨-૩ મહિનામાં આ રોગ નાશ પામે છે.

લીમડાના ૨૦૦ ગ્રામ પાન ૭૫૦ ગ્રામ પાણીમાં રાત્રે પલાળી લો. સવારે તેને ખુબ જ પીસીને કપડા અથવા ગરણી ની મદદ થી ગાળી લો. પછી તેને ઉકાળી ઘટ્ટ માવો બનાવી લો. આ દવા દરરોજ સવારે ગાયના માખણ સાથે સેવન કરવી. એક કલાક પછી લીમડાના પાન ના રસ માં ગાયનું ઘી નાખી તે રસ ૩૦ થી ૫૦ ગ્રામ જેટલો સેવન કરવું. આ પ્રયોગ કરવાથી બધા જ પ્રકારના હરસ મટી જાય છે.

લીમડાના પાન વાતી તેમાં ચપટી હિંગ નાખીને દરરોજ સેવન કરવાથી કૃમિ મરી જાય છે અને નવા કીડા પેટમાં થતા નથી.

લીમડાના પાન ને પીસીને તેનો ૧૦ થી ૨૦ ગ્રામ રસ કાઢી તેમાં મધ ઉમેરી સવારે ૫ થી ૭ દિવસ સુધી દરરોજ પીવાથી કમળમાં લાભ થશે.

પિત્તાશય માંથી નીકળીને આતરડા માં જનારી પિત્તનળી ના માર્ગનો અવરોધ થવાથી કમળા નોરોગ થાય છે. તે માટે લીમડાના પાન નો રસ ૧૦૦ ગ્રામમાં ૨ ગ્રામ સુથનું ચૂર્ણ અને ૬ ગ્રામ મધ મિલાવી અને ત્રણ દિવસ સવારે પીવાથી લાભ થાય છે.

લીમડાના પાન, ગળોના પાન, અને હિમેજ ૬-૬ ગ્રામ લઇ તેને એક સાથે પીસીને તેમાં ૨૦૦ ગ્રામ પાણી નાખીને ઉકાળી ૫૦ ગ્રામ વધે ત્યારે ગાળી લ્યો. તેમાં ૧૦ ગ્રામ ગોળ મિલાવી સવાર સાંજ રોજ સેવન કરવાથી પાંડુ તથા  કમળના રોગમાં ફાયદો થાય છે.

લીમડાના પાન ના રસમાં સરખા ભાગે અરડુસીના પાન નો રસ અને મધ મિલાવીને દરરોજ સવારે સેવન કરવાથી કમળો મટે છે.

લીમડા ના પાન પીસીને ઘી અથવા આમળા સાથે ખાવાથી લાભ થાય છે. લીમડાની આંતરછાલનો ઉકાળો પીવાથી શીળસ માં લાભ થાય છે. તથા લીમડાના ગરમ પાણી થી દરરોજ સ્નાન કરવું.

લીમડાના પાન ૪૦ ગ્રામ, સુંઠ, મરી અને લીંડીપીપરનું ચૂર્ણ ૧૨ ગ્રામ, ત્રિફળા ૧૨ ગ્રામ, સિંધા નમક ૧૨ ગ્રામ, જવખાર અને સાજીખાર ૮ ગ્રામ, અને અજમો ૨૦ ગ્રામ લઇ તેનું ચૂર્ણ બનાવી દરરોજ સવાર સાંજ ૫ થી ૬ ગ્રામ જેટલું ચૂર્ણ ઉકાળેલા પાકા પાણી સાથે લેવાથી મેલેરિયા તાવ માં ઝડપ થી રાહત મળે છે.

પરવળ ના પાન અને લીમડાના પાન બન્ને ને સાથે ઉકાળીને તેનો ઉકાળો બનાવી લો, તેમાં મધ નાખીને દરરોજ બે વખત પીવાથી ફાયદો થાય છે.

લીમડાના પાન કાંજી કે છાશમાં ઉકાળીને વાટીને ગાંઠ પર લગાવવાથી પણ ફાયદો થાય છે.

લીમડાના પાન વાતી તેમાં થોડીક સુંઠ તથા સિંધા નમક નાખીને તેની નાની થેપલી બનાવવી. આ ઠેપ્લીને બંધ આંખો પર મુકવાથી આંખનો સોજો, દુખાવો, તથા ખુજલી મટે છે.

લીમડાના પાન, ગળો, તુલસીપત્ર, સફેદ તલના પાન તથા કાળા મરી ૬ ગ્રામ નાખી એ બધા ને જરૂર પુરતું પાણી કે મધ નાખીને પીસી લેવું. પછી તેની નાનીનાની ગોળીઓ બનાવી દર્દીને દર ૩-૩ કલાકે ગરમ પાણી સાથે આપવાથી તાવ માં ફાયદો થાય છે.

જો આંખોની પાપણ જાડી થઇ ગઈ હોય, પાપણ ની કિનારીમાં ખુજલી થતી હોય, પાપણ ના વાળ ખરી જતા હોય અને પાપણ લાલ થઇ ગઈ હોય તો લીમડાના પાન નો ઘાટો રસ દિવસમાં ચાર પાંચ વખત લગાવવાથી લાભ થાય છે.

લીમડાના પાન સાથે ચપટી અજમો નાખી, પાણી સાથે વાટીને તેનો કાનપટ્ટી પર લેપ કરવાથી નાકમાંથી ફૂટતી નસકોરી બંધ થાય છે.

લીમડાના પાન અને છાલ ને સાથે વાટીને કપાળ પર લગાવવાથી પણ ફાયદો થાય છે.

લીમડાના પાન તથા અરડુસીના પાનના ૨૦-૨૦ ગ્રામ રસમાં થોડી સાકર કે મધ ઉમેરી રોજ સવાર સાંજ પીવાથી ફાયદો થાય છે.

લીમડાના પાન તથા આમળાનું ચૂર્ણ દરરોજ ઘી અને સાકર સાથે ખાવથી એસીટી, પિત્તની ઉલટી વગેરે મટી જાય છે.

લીમડા તથા કાળી ગ્રક્શના  ઉકાળામાં હરડે મિલાવીને દરરોજ પીવાથી પણ ફાયદો થાય છે.

લીમડાના પાનના બે ચમચી રસમાં ૫ ગ્રામ હરડે નાખીને દરરોજ પીવાથી અચૂક રાહત મળે છે.

લીમડાના ૨૦ ગ્રામ પાન ને સાફ કરી તેને સારી રીતે પીસી તેને ૧૦૦ ગ્રામ પાણીમાં ઘુટી ગાળીને ૨૦ ગ્રામ ની માત્રામાં દર્દીને આપવાથી ઉલટી બંધ થાય છે.

લીમડાના પાનને વાટીને તેની ગોળી બનાવી થોડાક ઘીમાં તેને પકાવી લો. તે ગોળી બળી જાય ત્યારે તે ઘીને ગાળીને બોટલા ભરી લો. આ ઘી રોટલી પર લગાવી રોજ ખાવાથી ૭ દિવસમાં ડાયાબીટીશ માં ફાયદો થાય છે

લીમડાના પાન ના ૨૦ ગ્રામ રસમાં ૧૦ ગ્રામ મધ મિલાવી દરરોજ પીવાથી ડાયાબીટીશ મટી જાય છે.

લીમડાના પાનની ભસ્મ ૨ ગ્રામ ની માત્રામાં થોડા દિવસ સુધી નિયમિત રીતે પાણી સાથે પીવાથી પથરી ગળી જાય છે.

લીમડાના પાન ૧૦૦ ગ્રામ લઇ ૧ લીટર પાણીમાં ઉકાળો, ૨૫૦ ગ્રામ પાણી વધે એટલે ઉતારી તેમાંથી ૫૦ ગ્રામ દવામાં સુરોખાર નાખીને સવાર સાંજ પાથી પથરી નીકળી જશે. આ ઉકાળાની વરદ નો પથરીની જગ્યાએ બાફ લેવો.

લીમડાના સુકા પાન, કાળા મરી અને ચોખા સરખાભાગે લઈને બારીક ચૂર્ણ કરી સવારે સૂર્યોદય પહેલા, માથું જે તરફ દુખતું હોય, તે તરફના નાકમાં આ દવા ફૂકવાથી કે સુંઘવાથી જૂનામાં જુનો આધાશીશીનો રોગ જલ્દી મટી જાય છે.

૫ નંગ લીમડાના તાજા પાનઅને તાજું આમળું ૧ નંગ (લીલું ના મળે તો સુકું આમદો ૬ ગ્રામ) લઇ સવારે તાજા પાણી સાથે વાટીને સૂર્યોદય પહેલા ગાડીને પુવાથી ફાયદો થાય છે.

કેળાના ક્ષારમાં હળદર અને ગૌમૂત્ર મિલાવી તેનો સફેદ દાઢ પર લેપ કરવાથી લાભ થાય છે.

માસિકધર્મ વખતે થતી પીડામાં લીમડાના પાન પાણીમાં બાફવા તે પાણીની વરદ નભી નીચે પેડુ પર લેવી કે પછી પાણીમાં મીઠું નાખી, પાંદ બાફી તેને પેડુ પર ગરમ ગરમ બાંધવા. સાથે રોજ લીમડાના પાન ૭ નંગ તથા થોડું આદું પાણી સાથે વાટીને સવારે પીવું.

આગળ આપને લીમડાના મોટા અને પાકેલા પણ લીલા રંગના તાજા પાનના ઉપયોગો જોયા હવે લીમડાના કુણા પાન કે કુંપળોના ખાસ ગુણધર્મો તથા આયુર્વેદિક પ્રયોગો વિષે જાણીશું.

લીમડાના કુણા પાન ગુણમાં વાયુકર્તા, સંકોચક તથા અરુચિ, રક્તપિત્ત, નેત્રવિકાર અને કોઢ મટાડનાર છે.

લીમડાની કુણી કુંપળો ૧૨ ગ્રામ લઈને તેમાં ૧ ગ્રામ ફૂલવેલ ફટકડી મિલાવી વાટીને તેની નાની નાની ગોળીઓ બનાવી લો. ૧ થી ૨ ગોળી ખાંડના શરબત સાથે લેવાથી બધા જ પ્રકારના તાવ ખાસ કરીને મેલેરિયા તાવમાં ખુબ જ લાભ થાય છે.

લીમડાની કુણી કુંપળો વાટીને તેમાં લીંબુનો રસ નાખી શરીર પર તેનો લેપ કરવાથી તાવ થી થતી બળતરા દૂર થાય છે અને તાવ ઉતરે છે. હૃદય,પેટ તથા પગની પીંડી માં થતી બળતરામાં કુપ્દોના પાન ઠંડા પાણી સાથે વાટીને લેપ કરવાથી પીડા શાંત થાય છે.

લીમડાની ૫-૬ કુંપળો વાટીને દરરોજ મધ સાથે સેવન કરવું. અથવા કુંપળો નો રસ ૧૦ ગ્રામ અને ૧૦ ગ્રામ મેળવી ૫ થી ૭ દિવસ સુધી દરરોજ પીવાથી અચૂક લાભ થાય છે.

પાકેલા ઝાડા માં લીમડાની કુંપળો અને બાવળના પાન ૬-૬ ગ્રામ લઇ, વાટીને તેનો રસ કાઢીને તેમાં મધ ઉમેરીને સવાર સાંજ પીવાથી તાત્કાલિક લાભ થાય છે.

લીમડાના પાનના ઉકાળાથી દરરોજ નહાવાથી ફાયદો થાય છે.

લીમડાના કુણા પણ નો ૨૫ ગ્રામ રસ કાઢી, તેમાં ૧ ગ્રામ મરી નાખીને સવારે પીવાથી ફાયદો થાય છે.

ઉનાળાની ગરમીથી લાગેલી લૂ ના ઉપાય તરીકે ૮ થી ૧૦ લીમડાના કુણા પાન, પાકી આમલી ૫ ગ્રામ તથા થોડુક મીઠું ભેગું કરી વાટીને રોજ સવારે ખાવાથી ફાયદો થાય છે.

લીમડાના પણ, સાટોડીના પાન અને તાંદળજા ના પાન સરખા લઈને તેને વાટીને તેમાં થોડીક હળદર નાખીને ગરમ કરીને સોજા પર તેનો લેપ કરવાથી સોજા ઉતરી જાય છે.

૧૨ ગ્રામ લીમડાના પણ અને ૬ ગ્રામ કાળા મરી તેનું ચૂર્ણ બનાવી પછી તેની નાનીનાની ગોળીઓ બનાવીને છાયામાં સુકવીને બોટલમાં ભરી લેવી. રોજ ૨-૪ ગોળી સાવર સાંજ પાણી સાથે લેવાથી ઉપર્યુક્ત બધા જ દર્દ રોગ નાશ પામે છે.

એક મુઠ્ઠી જેટલા લીમડાના પાનને ૫૦૦ ગ્રામ પાણીમાં ઉકાળો. પછી તેના પર કોઈપણ વાસણ ઢાંકીને એક બાજુએ થી થોડુક એવી રીતે ખોલો કે વરાળ ત્યાંથી બહાર નીકળે, તે નીકળતી ગરમ વરાળ ઉપર થોડે ઉંચે દુઃખતો કાન રાખી વરાળ લેવી. આમ કરવાથી કાન નો દુખાવો મટી જાય છે.

લીમડાના પાનના ૩ ગ્રામ રસમાં સરખા ભાગે રસ મિલાવી તેને જરાક ગરમ કરીને કાનમાં તેના ટીપાં નાખવા તેથી કાનમાં થયેલ જખમ કે ઘા રુઝાઈ જાય છે.

લીમડા ના પાન નું સેવન કરવાના અન્ય ફાયદા

લીમડા ની અંદર રહેલા ઉત્તમ ગુણો જેવા કે એન્ટિઓક્સિડેન્ટ, એન્ટીવાયરલ અને એન્ટીમૈક્રોબીયલ ગુણો જો સવારે ખાલી પેટે તમે સેવન કરો છો તો આ તમામ ગુણો તમારી ઈમ્યૂન સિસ્ટમને સારી કરવામાં મદદરૂપ થાય છે તેમજ તે તાવ અને હદય રોગને લગતી સમસ્યાઓ દૂર રાખવામાં મદદરૂપ થાય છે – Neem leaves benefits in Gujarati.

આઝાદી મળ્યા પછીના 50 વર્ષ દરમિયાન ભારતની વસ્તી 36 કરોડમાંથી વધીને 100 કરોડ જેટલી થઈ ગઈ છે. વસ્તીવધારાને લીધે આપણા દેશમાં અનેક ગંભીર સમસ્યાઓ સર્જાઈ છે. વધતી વસ્તીને વસાવવા માટે વધુ જમીનની જરૂર પડી છે. આ જમીન ઉપરથી વૃક્ષોનું નિકંદન કાઢવામાં આવ્યું છે. એ ઉપરાંત હવા, પાણી અને અવાજનું પ્રદૂષણ પણ ભયજનક હદે વધ્યું છે. આ ભયજનક પ્રદૂષણને નાથવાના આપણા દેશમાં અનેક ઉપાયો થઈ રહ્યા છે. જેમાંથી એક મહત્વનો ઉપાય છે વૃક્ષારોપણ.

વૃક્ષો આપણને અનેક રીતે ઉપયોગી છે. વૃક્ષોનાં પર્ણો પ્રકાશસંશ્લેષણની ક્રિયા દ્વારા હવાને શુદ્ધ કરે છે. વૃક્ષો જાતજાતનાં ફળો આપે છે. વૃક્ષોનાં મૂળિયાં જમીનનું ધોવાણ અટકાવે છે. વૃક્ષો રણને આગળ વધતું અટકાવે છે. કેટલાંક વૃક્ષોના મૂળિયાં અને પર્ણો ઔષધિ તરીકે વપરાય છે. કેટલાંક વૃક્ષોનાં પાન પડિયા-પતરાળાં બનાવવાના કામમાં આવે છે. વૃક્ષો વાદળાંને ઠંડા પાડીને વરસાદ લાવવામાં મદદરૂપ થાય છે. વૃક્ષોની શીતળ છાયામાં પશુઓ, ખેડૂતો અને વટેમાર્ગુઓ વિશ્રામ કરે છે. વળી વૃક્ષો ધરતીની શોભા છે. વૃક્ષો વિનાની ધરતી કેશ વિહોણા શીશ જેવી ઉજ્જડ લાગે છે.

આપણા દેશમાં થોડા વર્ષો પૂર્વે ગાઢ જંગલો આવેલાં હતાં. એ જંગલોમાં અનેક હિંસક પશુઓ વસવાટ કરતાં. જંગલોથી પશુઓનું અને પશુઓથી જંગલોનું રક્ષણ થતું. વાતાવરણમાં ઠંડક રહેતી. હવા શુદ્ધ રહેતી. પુષ્કળ વરસાદને કારણે વૃક્ષોમાં વધારો થતો. પરંતુ વસ્તીનો સતત વધારો થતાં રહેઠાણ માટેનાં મકાનો, નિશાળો, કારખાનાં, સડકો, રેલમાર્ગ વગેરે બનાવવા માટે જમીનની જરૂરિયાત ઊભી થઈ. વળી બળતણ માટે અને ઘરનું રાચરચીલું બનાવવા માટે પણ લાકડાની જરૂર પડી. આથી આડેધડ જંગલો કપાતાં ગયાં. પરિણામે જંગલોનો વિસ્તાર ઘટતો ગયો. માનવીએ પોતાની વધતી જરૂરિયાતને કારણે આડેધડ માનવવસાહતો સ્થાપી. આને કારણે ખેતીલાયક જમીન પણ ઓછી થવા લાગી. બીજી બાજુ જેટલાં વૃક્ષો કપાયાં, તેટલા પ્રમાણમાં નવાં વૃક્ષો ઉગાડવામાં આવ્યાં નહિ. પરિણામે વન્સ્પતિ ઘટતાં વરસાદનું પ્રમાણ સતત ઘટતું રહ્યું અને ભૂગર્ભજળનું સ્તર સતત નીચું ઊતરતું ગયું.

આપણા દેશમાં વનમહોત્સવ ઊજવાય છે. તે નિમિત્તે ખુલ્લી જગ્યામાં, રસ્તાની બંને બાજુએ, નિશાળોમાં અને પડતર જમીનમાં વૃક્ષો વાવવામાં આવે છે અને તેનું જતન કરવાનો સંકલ્પ કરવામાં આવે છે. આવા કાર્યક્રમોમાં બાળકોને મોટા પ્રમાણમાં જોડી દરેક બાળકને એક-એક વૃક્ષ વાવવાનું પ્રોત્સાહન આપવું તે ખૂબ જ ઉપયોગી નીવડી શકે. આથી વૃક્ષોની સંખ્યામાં વધારો કરી સૃષ્ટિસૌંદર્યમાં વધારો કરી શકાશે. વળી હવા, પાણી અને અવાજના વધતા જતા પ્રદૂષણના જટિલ પ્રશ્નનું નિરાકરણ પણ કરી શકાશે. દરેક બાળકને પ્રોત્સાહન આપી આપણે વૃક્ષોની સંખ્યા વધારતા જઈએ તો તે સમગ્ર માનવજાતિ માટે સૌથી ઉમદા કાર્ય બની રહેશે. આમ થવાથી પ્રદૂષણનું પ્રમાણ ઘટાડી વાતાવરણ સુધારી શકાશે. આપણે નિશ્ચય કરીએ કે, દરેક બાળક દર વર્ષે, એક-એક વૃક્ષ તો ઉગાડે જ. આ માટે એમને પ્રોત્સાહન અને માર્ગદર્શન આપીએ. આથી બાળકોને વૃક્ષો તરફ આપોઆપ પ્રેમ અને આકર્ષણ થશે. વાતાવરણ લીલુંછમ થશે અને પ્રદૂષણ ઘટશે.

Introduction to Neem Tree

Neem or Margosa is a botanical cousin of mahogany. It belongs to the family Meliaceae. The latinized name of Neem – Azadirachta indica – is derived from the Persian: Azad = Free, dirakht = Tree, i – Hind = of Indian Origin which literally means: ‘ The Free Tree of India ’.

Neem is a fast growing tree that usually reaches a height of 15-20 m, and under very favorable conditions up to approximately 30-35 m. As a rule it is a evergreen tree, but under extreme circumstances, such as extended dry periods, it may shed most of nearly all of its leaves. The branches spread widely. The fairly dense crown is roundish or oval and may reach a diameter 15-20 m in old free standing specimens. The trunk is relatively short, straight and may reach a girth of 1.5-3.5 m. The bark is hard fissured or scaly and whitish-gray to reddish-brown. The sap wood is grayish-white and the heart wood reddish.

The root system consists of a strong taproot and well developed lateral roots. The lateral surface root may reach over 18 m. Vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhiza (VAM) is associated with the rootlets categorized neem as a highly VAM dependant plant species.

The leaves are unpaired, pinnate, 20-30 cm long and the medium to dark green leaflets, which number up to 31, are approximately 3-8 cm long. The terminal leaf is often missing. The petioles are short. The shape of mature leaflets is more or less asymmetric.

Natural hybrids between A. indica and A. Siamensis , found in Thailand on places where both species grow together, have an intermediate position regarding the shape and consistency of the leaflets.

The white, gragrant flowers are arranged in axillary, normally more or less drooping panicles which are up to 25 cm long.

The glabrous fruits are olive- like drupes which vary in shape from elongate ovea to nearly roundish and when ripe are 1.4-2.8 x 1.0-1.5 cm . They are green when young and yellowish-green to yellow, rarely reddish when mature. The fruit skin (exocarp) is thin and the bitter-sweet pulp (mesocarp) is yellowish-white and very fibrous. The mesocarp is 0.3-0.5 cm thick. The white hard ‘shell (endocarp) of the seed encloses one, rarely two and very rarely three elongated seed kernels having brown testa.

Geographic Distribution

The neem is native of Indian subcontinent, it is widely distributed by introduction, mainly in the drier (arid) tropical and subtropical zones of Asia, Africa, the Americas, Australia and the South Pacific islands. In India it is widely distributed in many states. In Myanmar it is very common in the central parts of the country.

In the South Pacific neem occurs in the Fiji Islands. In Australia it was first introduced about 60-70 years ago. In Indonesia, neem exists mainly in the low-lying northern and eastern parts of Java and in the frier islands to the east (Bali, Lombok, Sumbawa). In the Philippines it was introduced during the seventies and eighties of the last century. In China, A. indica was planted on subtropical island of Hainan and southern china. In Nepal neem trees are found in the southern, low-lying areas (Tarai region). In Sri Lanka it is widespread in the drier northern parts of the island.

In Iran, neem trees grow along the coast up t the Chat el Arab in Iraq on the Arabian peninsula. In Qatar and Abu Dhabi neem was planted under irrigation using desalted seawater along avenues and parks. A large plantation was established on the Arafat plains near Makkah to provide shade for pilgrims.

Neem, indian lilac (azadirachta indica) – properties, benefits & dosage, description of plant.

Neem is evergreen tree but in extreme drought conditions this tree may shed almost all its leaves. It is fastest growing tree that reaches height up to 15-20mt and old trees may reach height up to 35-40mts. Branches of this tree are long, wide and spreading and has dense roundish crown. Diameter of the crown of old trees is about 15-20mts. This tree resembles very much to like tree of chinaberry. Trunk of the tree is short and straight about 1-2mt in diameter. Simple and opposite leaves are about 3-8cm long; young leaves of the plant are reddish to purple in color and mature leaves are dark green in color. Auxiliary flowers are arranged in drooping panicles and are small, white colored and fragrant. Size of individual flower is about 5-6mm long and 8-11mm wide. Olive like drupe fruit is oval to round in shape, smooth and immature fruits are green in color. After ripening color of fruit changes to yellow with pulp and seed inside.

In Ayurveda whole plant is used for its medicinal uses. Leaves and bark is used as blood purifier and are best to use for various skin troubles. Fruits of the plant are good carminative, purgative and emollient. Flowers are very good tonic and used for treating stomach disorders. Sanskrit name used for this herb is arishta that means perfect, complete and imperishable. Nature has served this plant with various organic compounds that are used as insecticides and pesticides. Wood of this plant is very hard and resistant to termite, bacteria, parasites and fungi. Commercially this wood is used for making doors, carts, yokes, packing boxes, ceiling blocks, furniture and also used in ships and boats. Bark is bitter, astringent and tonic used for the treatment of fever, nausea, vomiting and skin aliments.

Neem seed pulp is used in the production of methane gas in methane gas plant. Neem bark is rich in tannins and due to these tannins it is used for tanning and dyes.

Various chemical compounds available in this plant are nimbin, nimbinene, azadirachtol, azadirachtin, azadirachnol, nimbadinol, nimbolide, beta-sistosterol, quceretine, nimbiol, nimcine and n-hexacosanol.

• First shalok states that nimb, pichoomard, tikatak, arishta, paribhadra and hinguniryas are various synonyms of Azadirachta indica. Neem is light, absorbent, and pungent after digestion and has cold potency. It is used to control digestive fire and this herb is not good for heart. Neem is used in the treatment of vata disorders, thirst, cough, fever, anorexia, worms, wounds, pitta and kapha dosha and it is also used in the treatment of nausea, vomiting, leprosy and diabetes.
• Second verse states that leaves of neem are good for eyes, used for treating kapha, pitta dosha and poisoning, aggravates vata dosha, and very beneficial for all types of anorexia and leprosy. Leaves are bitter in taste and are pungent after digestion. Leaves are carminative, unctuous, light, hot in potency and used for various disorders like leprosy, tumors, piles, worms and diabetes.
