Electrical and Electronic Engineering

I have always been fascinated with how things work. At school I found my main interests lay in science subjects and mathematics and always achieved high grades. Among other school projects I mounted speakers and built a mini rocket propulsion. In my scientific projects and experiments, I have always followed one simple and efficient method, studying and understanding the basic theories and then using them to solve the problem. I have always sought to extend my knowledge of these subjects by considering the theory I have learnt beyond the curriculum to the outside world. I possess a scientific and mathematical mind, and have analytical skills which make me an ideal candidate to study engineering.

I was born in London where I spent the first fours years of my life. Although bilingual, French is now my first language. I am looking forward to returning to this thriving dynamic city. During my last visit I visited your campus and talked to tutors and students.I really appreciated the facilities, good atmosphere and personal interactions that exist there.

As a captain of a small Parisian football club I have helped organise the team and made it play cohesively by applying management skills and motivating each player, placing each one in the best position in the team, thus obtaining the best from each member and giving praise where due. As a result we have always been in the top three clubs of our league. I have acquired good management skills which are essential in a professional career.

Beyond my devotion to our football club, I also found time to help as a volunteer distributing soup to the homeless in Paris. This has helped me understand the importance of giving a hand where needed and to the differences of those from different cultures as are found in Paris.

I have also been fortunate to travel extensively with my family throughout Europe, to different African countries and by way of a total contrast to America.

I spent two weeks during the summer working with Microsoft. I really enjoyed my time there, where I was learning something new every day. I did a spell in all of the departments. The main objective was to learn how the company works and how to lead a project from the conception to the realisation of a product or software. I now appreciate the importance of the role of engineers, technicians, commercial and project managers and how they work together as a team in order to respond to the demands of clients.

I like the structure of your course where in the first two years students acquire a good technical and scientific foundation and then chose a speciality in during the two final years. The cross- disciplinary nature of the course and the good reputation of your university made me decide to apply for your degree.

With my strengths, skills and motivation to learn more about this subject I am ready to devote myself wholeheartedly to being an outstanding undergraduate at your university. I will be a hard-working, determined student, with a strong will to succeed in obtaining a prestigious degree which will be a great foundation to start a career in industry as an engineer. I very much look forward to the challenge of university and to a future varied and exciting career in engineering.

“Whilst my primary school friends were instructed by their parents to recite poems, I was asked by my father to dismantle our broken television. Circuits, electronics and signals were some of the most repeated words in my household, and I grew to enjoy the disassembly and rebuilding of gadgets more than playing with traditional toys. The sense of achievement I experienced whenever I repaired a radio or a lamp was far greater than my pride when scoring top marks in school tests. This ongoing interest in understanding how and why things work led me to study Electronic Information Engineering at Marshall University. I look forward to continuing my education in the Electrical Engineering program at the University of Buckley.”

Commentary and Analysis 

This is a relatively brief and simplistic introduction for a postgraduate course. It absolutely identifies the writer’s personal connection with the subject and roots the personal statement in authenticity and purpose, but it shows little immediate suitability. 

The lack of technical vocabulary, specific examples and depth of knowledge is highly apparent, and even if it is addressed further on in the application, its absence at the very start leaves the reader with the impression that this applicant does not have the depth of knowledge and ambition for a master’s course. 

On a positive note, they are obviously highly engaged and go out of their way to link their ambitions with the specific institution, which is a strongly recommended technique for an opening paragraph.

As my undergraduate study emphasised theory and application, I completed courses that trained me in experimental design and transferable skills such as problem-solving and organisation every semester. I was guided through this process by expert professors who taught me how to combine hardware and software skills. This helped me realise that both algorithmic development and programming are necessary for pursuing electrical engineering. Consequently, I chose to take an artificial intelligence course and extended my machine learning and programming proficiency through multiple research opportunities.”

Commentary and Analysis

This is a better paragraph, which begins to reflect a higher level of engagement and learning. The writer mentions relevant practical experiences that show skills development and value. They also achieve a balance between practical skills and coding experience, both of which would be highly relevant to the course. 

What’s missing here are references to specific modules and courses taken, the specific skills developed and their relevancy to specific modules offered on the postgraduate course. That level of connection, which runs through a ‘past, present, future’ timeline, is extremely compelling, and this seems like something of a wasted opportunity. It would be far more convincing to see detailed examples of skills and experiences and their tangible relevancy to success as a master’s student.

Personal Statement Example: Practical Experience 1

“Joining a research program on the Mars Rover Exploration in the Computer Image Recognition Lab at Slater University, I was tasked with applying artificial intelligence to upgrade the operations of the traditional manned rover. This led me to research topics in artificial intelligence and trained me to search for academic references from a scientific perspective. At the same time, I applied to be an undergraduate research assistant to Dr Lorna May, who was working on a project using comparative learning in computer vision to develop an intelligent recognition system for fruit and vegetables. Having summarised the basic framework, we utilised positive and negative examples for comparative machine learning before achieving state-of-the-art accuracy. I contributed to the framework establishment and patent writing, which was subsequently published.

I actively requested to conduct an independent research project on the ion transmission rate of the grid: research which resonates with this application due to its emphasis on simulation. After completing the modelling using Solidworks and analysing the geometric structure, I completed an online course on simulation software. I mastered COMSOL and Simion before employing them to conduct research which helped me verify my conclusions. I am currently using MATLAB to help analyse the data and prepare my final paper. These experiences allowed me to reproduce the recognition system using a given database, refine my scientific writing skills and, most importantly, become intimately familiar with theories and techniques in computer vision, preparing me comprehensively for graduate study.”

This is a much stronger and more compelling paragraph. We see clear, tangible examples of skills and experiences, all of which have relevance. Identifying research experience, discussing the value of the skills developed and showing a range of academic qualities are all convincing elements of content.

What’s lacking here, again, are specific connections between the skills and experiences the writer shares and their application as a postgraduate student. It would be far better to see exactly how these are linked with very specific course options. That way, the admissions reader would be able to see a direct connection between the experiences and ambitions of the writer and the content on offer at the university. 

When that link is made, applications are usually far more successful.

Personal Statement Example: Practical Experience 2

“Having read numerous papers by renowned professors working in cutting-edge fields, I was inspired to work with them to further my understanding and expertise. I was lucky to have the opportunity to attend the Machine Learning and Data Analysis academic research program led by Professor Peter Lumley from Parks University. This program improved my use of machine learning methods, and I developed a deeper understanding of the cross branch of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering. Professor Lumley lectured on machine learning topics, including exploratory data analysis, clustering and prediction using decision trees. I took the opportunity to engage in case studies where I processed large datasets in Python. Under his supervision, I led a five-member group to research data fusion, conducted a comparative analysis of the popular Matrix Factorization or Neural Collaborative Factorization-based algorithms like Doubly Robust Models, and conducted the subsequent theoretical analysis. Together we analysed estimators, including IPS, SNIPS and DR, reproducing codes and developing a successful optimisation method. As a team leader, I contributed to team dynamics, collaborated successfully with my peers and learned how to manage and coordinate work. The 4th International Conference on Computing and Data Science subsequently accepted our group paper.

As a result of my research and practical exploration, I have developed a significant interest in topics including computer vision, image processing and natural language processing, which are established through signal processing. I aim to examine these disciplines at a high level by pursuing a graduate program in Electrical Engineering at the University of Buckley. One of the top programs in the world, the course offers unparalleled research resources and collaborative opportunities with renowned professors who are at the cutting edge of challenging and interesting topics that directly align with my interests. I am keen to take advantage of the program’s Computer Engineering focus. I am attracted by the Embedded Systems and Data Mining courses, which will advance my abilities in data analysis and applications through using single-chip micyoco. I found the papers outlining the department faculty and Professor Marcie Jackson’s research projects on sensors particularly fascinating. I would be honoured to work under his guidance and help find new approaches to vision sensors that detect features such as motion, line orientation, line stops and polarisation differences.”

Commentary and Analysis: 

Again, much of this content is excellent. It shows depth, experience, dedication and motivation. The second paragraph finally begins to make tangible connections with the course options, and immediately, the personal statement becomes less descriptive and list-like and increasingly personal, engaging and compelling.

There’s a strong level of research evidence and relevancy in the second paragraph as well, showing that the writer understands the course on offer. You also feel a connection between the writer’s ambitions and what is offered on the course, which is critical. This last section has brought the reader back into the application, as the relevance and individuality of the content has been made clearer.

The one thing that all successful personal statements have in common is that they are concise, engaging and accurate in spelling, punctuation and grammar. Consequently, I always recommend Grammarly to my students and clients.

Personal Statement Example: Conclusion

“I aim to bring vitality and diversity to the Buckley community. Since high school, I have actively participated in volunteer activities, organising several events for disabled groups. I am interested in contributing to the Committee for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and would like to help those in need. In college, I have contributed to four courses as a student assistant, have strong classroom management skills and am adept at improving student performance. Consequently, I would be pleased to offer my services as a TA or RA. 

At Buckley, I will fully devote myself to graduate study, follow my tremendous passion for research and prepare to reach my academic goal of becoming a PhD candidate. My ultimate goal is to join a research institute or a university, lay the foundations for a college teaching career and go on to make valuable breakthroughs in my field. I look forward to joining the Buckley community, playing an active and positive role as a valued faculty member, and contributing to a mutually enriching academic and research experience.”

This conclusion works extremely well, as it doesn’t repeat previous content. Instead, we discover a more rounded and mature aspect of the writer’s background and personality. Above all, we see the value that the applicant brings to the university community, beyond the academic. This is often a crucial and overlooked aspect of an application, as it shows the reader that the writer has a life outside academia, can manage real-world situations and has something of value to contribute.

The last paragraph is a little vague. It talks about passion, making breakthroughs and contributing to research, but very little detail is given. It’s not the end of the world, but detailed suggestions of strategies, specifics and value (such as what the research focus might be) would add a little more weight.

In summary, this is an effective personal statement, but unbalanced. There’s a strong focus on past experience but not enough content that links the value of those experiences to the proposed course of study.

It is also used to show a student’s enthusiasm for engineering (either in general, or for a specific type such as civil or aeronautical), and what aspects of the subject they enjoy and why.

It is essential for an applicant to craft a 100% unique, yet effective personal statement as it allows universities to make an informed decision on who to admit to their engineering course.

A good framework to follow is to first explain your motivation and enthusiasm for the course, and provide examples of any specific knowledge you already have.

Then, outline any relevant experience, insights, interests or achievements you have that relate to engineering, starting with the most impressive.

By doing so, you can demonstrate to the university that you have the necessary skills and qualifications to succeed in their program.

Stories of self-doubt are common among engineering students. That was a key finding of a study conducted recently at Boise State University by a team of researchers.

Students surveyed questioned their abilities. They were sure everyone else understood the material. They said they didn’t fit in. They wondered whether they should quit engineering and find a different major.

Many students who possess the aptitude to become engineers choose not to persist in their major because of the stories they tell themselves – about not belonging, about not being the “type” of person who can become an engineer. This is not just a problem for students and engineering or STEM culture. Because of the need to fill a growing number of STEM-related jobs , it affects society at large.

We – an interdisciplinary team of researchers with backgrounds in materials science , engineering education , educational technology and consumer psychology – are conducting research on a new approach to support students who question whether they fit in engineering.

With the aid of National Science Foundation funding , we are two years into testing a simple idea. We started with the assumption that the stories students tell themselves about whether they belong in engineering are related to their negative beliefs about their abilities. And then we asked educators at Boise State University to try a novel approach to changing those stories. While our research is still under review, preliminary findings suggest storytelling could be a game changer.

New assignment: Tell a story

Through a partnership with The Story Collider , a nonprofit that helps people learn the art of storytelling, engineering faculty at BSU have begun giving engineering students a new assignment: Tell stories about how they overcame a problem.

Students write their stories, receive feedback to help them better develop their ideas, then record themselves narrating their work.

Toward the end of the semester, a few students present their stories in a professionally produced storytelling show. Recent shows, available online, featured stories about realizing potential , starting over and being volunteered for unwanted work .

We conducted before-and-after surveys with 113 students and in-depth interviews with 22 students over the first two years – or four semesters – of the program. The students who participated in the storytelling project identified more strongly as engineers, had a stronger sense of belonging in an engineering community and were more likely to state they intend to continue in their major. The research team is still gathering data to discover whether more students actually stay with their majors and finish engineering degrees.

One student said writing about a time she “freaked out” in a research lab allowed her to validate herself as an engineer. “Yeah, mistakes can happen. But that’s OK.”

Positive effects of creating the narrative

The storytelling exercise resulted in more than one benefit. By telling a story about overcoming a challenge, students’ perception of their abilities – as measured on empirically validated self-report scales – improved.

Research shows that the lack of diverse representations of scientists fosters a stereotypical view of engineers. Hearing the students read their stories also reduced listeners’ stereotypes of engineers as competent but nerdy and lacking empathy . Audience members surveyed after the presentations said they viewed engineers as more likable and trustworthy.

Like many stories, this project also has a moral: The change in students’ self-image after telling their stories, as shown by our research, highlights the ability of something as simple as sharing a story to effect change. When educators recognize this ability and encourage students to take control of their personal narrative, they can ultimately help more students find success.

Electrical and electronic engineering personal statement example 3.

Curiosity has always been my nature since I was young and I was never afraid to know more as I really like challenges.

This is why I have a keen interest in science ever since I started formal education, it explains the hows and whys in almost anything and everything.

As I grow older, I realise that Physics actually fits me better than other sciences like Biology and Chemistry. It intrigues me a lot and leads me to the decision of pursuing my studies in engineering.

Among so many branches of engineering, why would I choose electrical and electronics engineering. Today we are living in an era of technology, electricity plays an important role in our daily life and we can hardly get through a day without electricity.

Electricity is a form of energy. We cannot feel its presence with our physical senses, but we still strongly rely on it.

Simple things around us like the light, television and even our mobile phones, none of them can be operated without electricity. In addition to that, Tesla Motors, a U.S company even manufactures electric cars which are fully electric powered.

As we can see, electricity has had, and will continue to impact our daily life. I am truly amazed by how this invisible but powerful form of energy affect us so much and this is one of the main reasons I wish to further my studies in electrical engineering.

Growing up, the exposure to mass media such as documentaries and Internet has slowly induced my passion towards electrical engineering. I have always enjoyed watching “Mythbusters” and “Curiosity” on Discovery Channel. These documentaries gave me the answers to a lot of questions on my mind.

During my Diploma in electrical engineering studies in INTI College, I have gained more knowledge in electrical engineering through lectures and experiments.

I never knew that we were able to design a door bell by just implementing RC circuit theory and passive components. Besides that, mathematical principles can also be used in circuit analysis.

System behaviours of a circuit can be determined and analysed by mathematical approach or using MATLAB software, which is something new to me.

On top of that, I have seen my seniors building an interactive robot, Mega 1 from scratch. The robot went all the way to Madrid, Spain for a robotics contest and they even won the grand prize! I feel motivated and I am even certain with my decision of becoming an electrical engineer after looking at their works.

I believe that by exploring deeper in this field and utilising what I have learnt, one day in the future I could be like them or even better and introduce more creations to this world. Besides that, I will begin my internship in Philips Lumileds Lighting Company in January 2015.

I believe this experience will grant me insight into the real industrial world and the organization structure of a multinational company, thus prepare myself for the future.

Apart from striving for academic excellence, I am also actively involved in extracurricular activities. I used to be the secretary of my high school’s Young Enterprise Club.

I have learnt that teamwork, determination and good communication are the keys to success. I was very glad and proud to be part of our team, we won the Best Managed Company award.

Besides that, I was also a Training Director in our school’s JCI Junior Club. I developed a sense of responsibility to give back to the society.

During college, I joined the electronic club and Student Ambassador to broaden my knowledge and improve my leadership and communication skills.

I enjoy watching educational videos or documentaries online during my free time as these keep me updated on the current trend and technology.

Furthermore, I play all kind of sports like basketball, soccer and Frisbee to keep myself physically and mentally healthy.

I believe that UK has high quality education and I hope with my electrical engineering qualification, I will be able to make this world a much better place. Will building an Iron Man suit be still a dream? Or a reality?

Well, I believe engineering holds the answer.
