Nowadays, innovation is a crucial element of business development. The globalisation and new technological advances have forced many companies to invest more in innovation, in order to stay competitive in a fast-paced economy. A big difference is observed in the innovation performance of the European Union member states. Based on the European Innovation Scoreboard (2018), the majority of the Southern-European countries and the New Member States joined to the EU in 2004 are moderate innovators.
